Grab Handles

Hey. So I'm thinking about getting grab handles to put on the roll bar of my 2010 JK Unlimited, but there is foam there. I know that all you have to do is unzip the fabric and pull out the foam, but I'm wondering how much removing that foam would compromise the safety.

I'm thinking that I have a couple options here, since putting the handle doesn't seem like it would be very sturdy (unless other people have done it and it works fine):

Option 1: Remove all the fabric and foam and leave the bare roll bar there.

Option 2: Remove the foam, leave the baggy covering fabric, and put the handle over top the fabric.

Option 3: Cut a section out of the foam long enough to put the handle there, put the fabric back on, and then put the handle over the fabric and in the gap in the foam.

What have other people done? I'm assuming that the most common choice would be to just take off the fabric and foam? How much does removing the foam compromise the safety? Any other suggestions/options? Any handles that you guys recommend? I appreciate everyone's help.

If you always wear your seatbelt, the only time you have to worry is when you crawl into the back seat.

I have grabbers over the foam & cover of my TJ.

Most of them (all of them I've seen) are made to wrap around the roll bar padding. There's no harm removing the roll bar padding, except to your noodle when you bang into it....

I could see that if I got t-boned, or rolled somehow that my head could hit the metal bar up there even with the seatbelt on.

In early 2009, when I put My Rockhard cage in, I had a bunch of grab handles that I put all over, (since removed them)

They use velcro (3-2"wraps/ea) so are very strong, I think they were Rugged Ridge

You don't really have to remove any foam, these will support over 300 lbs anyway

Check out the ones at Jeep & Cargo Nets. They look like the best I have found. I bought the mopar ones because they were the cheapest and I got them at the dealership with no shipping costs involved.

By the way. They are designed to just wrap over the foam and padding on the bar.

Those look great! It has always annoyed me that when you actually USE the ones I have, they pull and sag in the middles. I think I will order these and replace mine!!

I used the stock OEM on the front and they work real well. For the back seat, I got the Rugged Ridge (part #13305.14-15) that match the stockers and they bolt right in to the holes already there. Very happy with both!

have you ever actually hit your head on those bars? the foam seriously doesn't do much. i think it's more for looks than safety

I just bought a set of grab handles from Safari Straps. For my Unlimited I got 2 front handles, two rear handles, and two for the back of the headrests with shipping for less then $50. Straps are great. The fronts go right around the foam. Worth checking out. Not only that, but they threw in a free winch strap for free. Now all I need is a winch to go with my free strap!

Wish they had a set like that for TJ's. Buying it all individually is like 100 bucks!

i have two grab handles that were never installed when i picked up my jeep last week. Are they suppose to go in the front for driver and passenger or in the back? I guess they could also be installed on the top roll bar?

I have the same ones jimbo has except in black, I weigh 200 pounds, and I hung from them one at a time and they didn't budge. Definitely worth the money. Also you don't have to take anything off, they attach over the complete roll bar system.

I was looking for a set of grab handles for mine. Are the poison spider ones pretty good? Anyone else's opinion?

Those spyder handles look almost identical to rugged ridge except for the label and color...

I like the mopars OK, but every time I get them tight enough around the foam, I can't thread the strap up through the buckle because it's too tight to move and kinda digs into the foam...so either have them looser than I want or have straps hanging down.
If I cut the straps, they will probably unravel.

They are very similar to the RR ones. As said, they are both very high quality, but I have to say I think the PS ones are the highest quality ones I've found as of yet. They are super tough!

grab handles

You can find them numerous places, found some on e-bay.I have a set on my Jeep, they have three straps which go around rollbar with the foam and cover left on. I think the three straps keep them in place a little better. paid less than 20 bucks for mine, brand new. Love em! It is the only way my wife can get in!
