Green Blinking Light Under Steering Column

Have a 2012 Sahara Unlimited and have never been able to figure out what the green blinking light under the steering column is.... It's always blinking and it has a small button on the plastic light housing.

What is it?

Forgot to mention it looks like a receiver to plug some kind of wiring harness into...

Notice any black vans or sedans following you around?

Could it be the dealers lot security hardware that they forgot to take out?

That's weird. Usually they plant the bombs on the outside of the vehicle.

I really want to know what this is. I'm paranoid about crap like this.

There's a website called reddit and they have a whole section dedicated to finding out what stuff is. Take these pictures and post then over there in case no one here knows what it is.

It is most likely a secuirty part that was not removed when sold. Hopefully there are not screw holes in the lower dash if it is removed.

Yeah it's screwed in and there are wires running up in towards the steering column.

Take it back to the dealer and ask! Or give them a ring and ask

I have this too. It's a dealer security system. It's main function is, ON THE LOT, to open the windows when a thief tries to break one. This is to save money from having to replace so many windows.

When someone buys the vehicle the dealer usually offers them two choices:

1. Pay a couple hundred dollars and the dealer will activate 'consumer' mode in which the alarm basically becomes an impact sensor and sets everything off when someone tries to break a window, etc. It might have another function as well. It ties into your key fob and is activated/deactivated based on using your key fob. In fact if you lock the jeep with your fob then unlock it with your actual key in the keyhole then you'll set the alarm off.

2. Don't pay, and the dealer simply disables it. You need to request for them to remove it if you actually want it completely removed and not just disabled. Most people allow the dealer to keep it there because then you get a free blinking light that *might* deter someone later on.

Isn't the functionality you describe part of the factory security system? I've already done this on my JK by accident and set my alarm off, and I don't have any blinking doodads on the underside of my dash.

Might be a glass break detector. Clap you hands near it to see if it triggers.

It's an anti theft system the dealer installed. The finance guy is supposed to upsell it when u buy the vehicle. Obviously the OP didn't purchase it. It can be removed and yes u will have 2 screw holes in the panel. I installed thousands of these. Never buy it.

On a new vehicle? If I was the OP I'd have them replace the panel at thier cost; dealer stickers are bad enough, drilling holes in my dash would cross the line.

I bought it, but I've always doubted its worth much. Since you have first hand experience can you tell me why one should never buy it?

The " keys" that they sell are generic. They don't have a rolling code feature like alarms do. If ur friend has a "key" from the same dealer he can use it in your vehicle. That module is an anti start. It ties into the ignition wire and a couple of others ( wont say more on Internet). Where I worked we would put them in as part of the PDI.
