The way I did mine was with gorilla glue and some zip tie mounting blocks. But you have to remove the foam backing in order for the blocks to get a good bond to the grille.
I put a bead of 3m weather strip adhesive (Black) around the inside of the opening. Then i pressed the wire mesh in its correct position and held it for a couple of minutes for it to start to cure. Then i put another Bead of adhesive over the top sandwiching the wire mesh in the middle. You can not see the adhesive from the outside and will make a stronger bond then using zip ties.
I did the cheap plastic zip tie 10 dollar grill inserts and they SUCK!!! The glue released and they just flapped in the wind. I even used addition gorilla glue along with the adhesive tabs they provide. Just pony up a little more money ($65) and get the real wire mesh one from Extreme Terrain. It's super tough and looks 10 times better. I'm all for cheap mods but those flimsy plastic ones are just really really lame and they wont hold up compared to the real wire mesh.
I just did the DIY grill insert yesterday. Turned out awesome. Instead of the cheap plastic gutter guard, I got strips of the heavy duty gutter guard from Home Depot for a little better quality. They were 2.84 a strip and I got two peices cut out of each one.
I had to fight to get mine to stick (redo). after removing and rough sanding with 80 grit to give it some tooth they finally have stayed put. I used a steel mesh that was pre-curved so it put allot of stress on the zip ties. If I had it all to do over, I would have purchased a good set. I did mine and my wifes Jeep the same way.
I used metal gutter guard too. I got 6 pieces out of one guard. So I only used three, but I thought it would take more so I bought five. I did my wife's Jeep today. I painted hers, but I'm going to leave mine black.
Got mine done. I like the way they turned out. It's a cool mod because you can go bold like I did with my wife's Jeep or subtle like mine. It's cheap, and perfect when it's hot outside. Besides painting I did everything in the ac.
