Talking the mesh backing or snap in thingy still leaving grill hole open? Best deal for mesh backing to protect radiator is the rugged ridge, about 50$ on amazon from CSE OFFROAD, fit like a champ and not a piece it together DIY with gutter gaurd! Nice heavy duty powder coated steel! Grill inserts that are just trim around the holes still leaving a hole, worthless!!

inserts

I bought a roll of black gutter guard at Home Depot. 1x1 self adhesive clips to hold zip ties and about an hour of my time. Looks awesome. Clips go behind grille, don't even see 'em.

It is rugged brown, and I love the color. If you search the color in the forum, I have sent in some pics you could look at!!

Mr Grille billet aluminum grille guards are about the toughest you'll find but not cheap.

Lots of threads on this already. I have the Metalcrafters grill insert. Made in USA.

Rather expensive if you pay full price. I found one on Cragslist, brand new, for somewhat less.

Not really a whole lot of cons...

They don't work with the Mopar hood lock without cutting the insert.....
They cut into your beer fund...
They tend to be another gateway mod which leads to further beer fund shortages....

Depending on spacing of openings, they may restrict your airflow. If you live in a hot area, say Phoenix, I don't think you'd want anything limiting air flow to radiator. 2012's and later have tranny cooler on top of radiator and may already be cutting back on quality/volume of air. I'll be pulling a trailer with mine and I don't think I'll be installing anything to restrict airflow.

I think that the chances of a mesh causing a problem with airflow restriction are probably smaller than a stone kicking up on the highway and hitting your radiator through the massive holes in the front grille.

Made my own thanks to a write up over in the 10A mods thread, cost about 40$ in parts including paint and a drop cloth since I didn't have anything else. Took about 4 hours to attach but was well worth the time IMO.

Metalcrafters here. Black chrome over stainless. This thing is indestructable. And in the sun, it sparkles like a diamond in a goats ass.

Have to ask, how is the MetalCrafters different from the T Rex metal grill?

How was the install on this? Is any cutting or drilling required? Thx!

Installed a Rugged Ridge mesh insert this weekend. Took the grill off, drilled four holes in the tabs on the back side of the grill to hold the support bars, and snapped the grill back in place. The vendors have installation instructions on their websites so you can tell what you're getting into before actually purchasing.

It was fairly easy. The only thing you have to drill is a small hole to relocate the ambient air temp sensor. The new location is shown in the pic below. It used to be in that rectangular hole in front of it. Leave the sensor in the bracket and plugged in when you mark the new hole location so you'll be sure the wiring harness can reach it without being stretched tight.

Thanks very much. I wasn't fully clear on relocation so I really appreciate your picture! Are you happy with the product, overall? I'm not sure about it vs. the T-Rex. Did you consider both?

Yes, I like how the black looks with the Deep Cherry Red on the Jeep. I hadn't shopped around for a lot of others. When I learned that the Metalcrafters one is made in the USA and I found a new one on Craigslist for a lot less than the $289 normal cost I decided to get it.
