Had A Bad Jeep Day

For those of you who want to skip to THE POINT scroll down to the bold areas.

So for the past few weeks we have been hearing this knocking noise from the side pillar where the front seat belts are attached. This noise would happen when we hit various bumps and dips in the road.

Well over this time it began to get irritating because I wasn't able to locate the source of the noise. After doing some self diagnosing (taking off various parts) to see what the culprit was. I determined that it was the locking pin where the door latches closed.

So I take it to the dealership and explain what the problem is and what i did to determine this. They tell me oh yeah all kinds of people have been complaining about this its and easy fix and we will have it back to you in a few hours.

Well feeling a sense of relief and trusting that my vehicle was in good hands... I hand them the keys and leave.

About three hours after I dropped off the Jeep I get a call from my wife who said she just saw the jeep going down the hwy and she wanted to know why so she stopped by the dealership and waited for them to pull pack in.

Thirty Minutes of waiting they pull back in and they tell her they went able to fix the problem and they aren't sure where the noise is coming from. And that they had some bad news. While they were looking into the problem the tech over tightened the hinge nut and broke the hinge pin on the rear door. HOW THE DO YOU DO THAT? The problem wasn't even with the back door. So now I have the same annoying rattle less gas and more problems. They have to order a new hinge paint it, and still fix the original problem.

So to prove my point I place a few wraps of electrical tape, wrapped it around the locking pin and drove it to the dealership, I offered to give them a ride in it to prove the noise was gone. They politely refused.

I have the same problem with the rattle. Its been driving me crazy trying to figure out what was the source. You say it is locking pin where the door latches close? I want to check it out before I take it in and get the run around. I have not used my dealership, so I don't know what to expect.

It is a crappy situation, but try t look on the bright (ok, less dark) side. They are fixing their screw up and you can try taking it to another dealer. Plus it could be worse, when I first started reading I though either one of two things happened. 1) they crashed your jeep, or 2) the jeep was stolen. I easy glad that neither one of those happened and it were just left with a rattle and snapped bolt. Good luck with evertthin, and hopefully it gets fixed soon so you can put it all behind you

The first few nights.....man....how do you guys get any sleep in all of this noise....six months later....what noise....slept like a baby last night. I'ts all relative.

Ahhh sorry to hear about your day! I was expecting the worst while reading as well...I was picturing it wrapped around a telephone pole. At least they have to fix it for you.

I hear the same noise every now and then as well. Please update this thread when they figure it out. Or maybe I'll just put some tape on it lol

the issue

the "chucking" ratttle you hear is the latch pawl to striker. It is probably dry. It comes from the plant with a lubricant call Krytox. Buy a tube and apply to the pawl (the latch part that grabs the striker).

Will white lithium grease work the same?

Dealer TSB - issued in 2008 - 23-024-28. Not sure about White Lithium, it should work for a while.

Did I miss something here? Did they have an explanation as to why they were driving your Jeep around for at least 30 minutes for a door problem? Seems to me that if you were checking for noises, city streets not highways would be the place to drive. Of course I am not an overpaid stealership mechanic so what do I know?
