Merlinn pinged me and Dan and I came up with a plug-n-play super-option for him.

It's similar to what I had Rallylights do for me to use the stalk to trigger my LED driving lights with highbeams.
The Super Oscars and Cibie headlights should make and almost flawless spread of light with the highbeams on.

Merlinn's going to have an awesome set-up.

Thanks for the info. I bought my Hella H4 conversion headlight kit from them, but I didn't realize that they did custom work beyond the headlight kit. Since I've already dealt with them and I'm extremely happy with my headlights, I'll check back with them for their recommendations on driving lights.

Bill also has many contacts that you may want to seek advice from, depends on the scope of your project...

I'm still working out the details for a custom driving light, using Hella H-4's( yeah, the headlights) since I have a set and now running Cibie's, rallylights is making the harness and relays, getting them to compliment the headlights is another story......

I must thank Hilldweller for all his help in getting this sorted for me. We all are very fortunate having such individuals willing to share their time and expertise for all our benefit .
I hope to have the basics of this working tomorrow evening and take it into the dealer to run the switch for the driving lights. I am having trouble finding the right route into the passenger compartment.

Open either front door, look at the dash. Pop off the plastic cover that lives inboard of the rearview mirror on the dash; it comes off easily.
Note the little hole in the metal toward the engine with some foam filling in it. Take a wire coathanger (straightened out) and do a poke-n-hope all the way through. Use the hanger to fish your wires through.

Pick a spot for your switch that's easy to get to. If it's lighted, maybe you don't want it in line-of-sight.

You and Joel, when all done, will have a couple of the coolest and best working light systems on the forum.

And yes; Rallylights can build anything you can think of. I have a couple boxes of Hitachi connectors, various male/female blocks, resistors, and half a ton of wire. But when I wanted a nice clean install for my lights, I dialed Rallylights without hesitation and asked them to build my harnesses. I wanted it to stay together...

Thanks for the information. I have read a lot of Bill's headlight postings on this forum, another Jeep forum, and even a forum for lighting. Bill, if it weren't for your analysis, I'd be stuck with some poorly designed product that would have wasted my money and probably wouldn't have been any better than stock. In fact, I would probably be content with the factory headlights and I would have added even more aftermarket lighting to illuminate out front of my Jeep.

After reading a lot of threads and reviewing your analysis and posted pictures to demonstrate light output, I was going to get the Cibie lights from Dan, but he seemed to be on vacation until recently. I went with the Hella H4 recommendation that you said was a good option. I bought them from Rallylights. With the Hella lights, I don't really need any other lights out front. I think they are that good. Of course I still want some auxillary lights to mount on the front bumper, so I have to find something that is a good complement to the Hella's. Now that I know Rallylights can build other things besides headlight wiring harnesses, I'll be contacting them again when I get ready for my next lighting project.

I'm still undecided on what driving lights to get. I'm looking at LED, but I'm going to see what the Super Oscars are all about before I pull the trigger.

I got everything working. The difference in light is amazing. The Cibie headlights as expected from all the previous reports are great. The Super Oscars with the 55 bulbs, 100's were available, are incredible, combined with the headlights, I have an unbroken wall of even light for what seems like forever.

The net result.. I could not be more pleased.

The biggest problem here is that too much light, right in front will negate good vision at a distance...I've been working this out for 6 months, trying to get the perfect combination. But, I'm making custom driving lights, using H-4 Hella headlights.

It's too bad that there are no more Cibie Z-beams available, these lens are absolutely amazing.....your setup sounds very good though and I'm assuming that you are a believer now....?

So I feel happy with shiny new lights, and I feel like the alignment is fine, but it seems to through light pretty high, I seem to be lighting up signs on the highway from at least a quarter mile away. How can I tell if my headlights are aligned properly. What type of pattern should they be throwing? right now its almost like 2 bowties, but the one on the right side of the vehicle is twisted up slightly so the right most bow is angled slightly high. and there seems to be a halo effect, forming a crescent on the drivers side.

Park your Jeep so that your headlights are 25 feet away from a wall or your garage door with your low beam headlights on. On the wall or garage door, draw a horizontal line 3 feet up from the ground with tape. Align your headlights so that the top of the light is at the 3 foot mark.

I'm pretty sure I have to, but I've been known to miss the obvious. Do I have to take off the grill to access the alignment bolt?

No. Use a torx driver ---- the screws are on the outside of each light, on the ring, at 10:00 and 2:00. It's the screw that looks different than the other retaining screws.

Here's how to aim them.

wait, I can get at that screw from behind as well? I saw it when I put the lights in, but I thought they were covered by the grill cover. Now I need to go look again. I'm assuming, since I havn't adjusted at all, the light should be focused to look like 2 half circles, horizontal line up, when I have them on the wall? And thanks for the link. Just need to find an unsuspecting building to check alignment on.

I saw on the website 'off a cough' mentioned, that the Rallylights H4 conversion kit is not for use with DRL's. Assuming this means Driving Light's, I would like to ask something realy lame: what's the difference between driving light and normal light? And, why can't you use them simultaneously?

Here in Europe we've got the so-called day-drive-lights which, as the name already suggests, are illegal to drive with a night. They actually almost do not provide any light at all.
Besides those, we've got the normal light, which you would use during night (or during the day too, if you prefer being easily seen).
Thirdly, we've got the high-beam, which you would only use in case of poor sight and no upcoming traffic.
Finally there are ofcourse the fog lights.

You can access the torx screw with the grill on. There is a small indentation next to the headlight opening at the 10:00 position on the passenger side and at the 2:00 position on the driver side that will let you make adjustments with the grill on. The indentation is large enough to fit a torx driver next to the headlight. The light that you see won't be exactly as a half circle. If you have the H4 Hella lights, the top of the light will cutoff with a clearly visible line at the top that will be easy to see for making adjustments.

DRL's are daytime running lights in the USA. I'm not sure why the H4 Hella lights can't be used as DRL's unless it is because they are European lights. Since European lights are a different lighting standard, I'm guessing "no DRL's" is put on the website like other websites put "for offroad use only" for other aftermarket products that are sold. It is to protect themselves due to the government regulations. If someone uses the lights for DRL's and gets a ticket, it isn't the company's fault that sold the lights. What people actually do with the lights after they are purchased could be something entirely different that what the government allows and this is a way for the company selling the lights to not get in trouble.

The DRLs won't work with an H4 conversion that uses a harness since the PWM circuit is bypassed and is only used to trip the relays. The DRL feature needs to be programmed "off".
If you're in a state that requires DRLs, you can either remember to always turn on your headlights or you can buy a neat little gizmo that turns your parking lights into DRLs and meets the DOT requirements. Yeah, it's available from Daniel Stern... ...I'm just a fan, he doesn't pay me a commission...

"Driving Lights" are supplemental lighting as an adjunct to highbeams. A single reflector system, whether H4 or H13, will often have more gaps in coverage than a dual reflector system like my Power Wagon has. The driving lights can fill in the holes or even be aimed further out to infinity for high-speed driving.

Cibie's Oscar series of lights are fairly awesome. I also like Hella's Rallye 4000 Euro pattern ---- nice and wide spread.

Driving lights I don't like much: Lightforce (unless you buy them for their robustness, not pattern), KC, Hella Black Magic or regular 500s, most Deltas
