Half Doors and windows - options/suggestions?

Looks like if I order a Sahara I'm out of luck getting factory half doors unless they are ordered seperately by my dealer. Any idea what invoice is on these?

What are the windows like for the factory half doors? Do they actually seal water out? Do they zip out?

Lastly... aside from the factory half doors... who makes the best combo, doors/windows? Looks to me like the Highrock 4x4 Element Doors by Bestop are pretty cool and you can order them factory painted. Can anyone attest to these doors/windows as being good or cheesy?

This question comes up enough that it should be a sticky on the forum.

In short, if you are buying a soft top and your primary reason for buying a jeep is to go topless or open-air, you would be foolish not to get the Sport or Rubicon and order half-doors from the factory, for the following reasons.

- Half-doors are a no charge swap for full doors on the Sport, and a discount on the Rubicon (because you lose power windows)

- Factory half doors from MOPAR after buying the jeep are about $3300 on a JKU BEFORE paint, which for a factory job with rustproof, primer, and quality coat will run another $1000-$1500.

- Aftermarket half-doors are somewhat cheaper but no where close to the quality of factory parts. Go look at some in person, compare them to factory, and you will see exactly what I mean.

- Forget any arguments about not being as secure as full doors. If you have a soft top, you are already not secure - period.

- Hard and soft tops both seal to the window frames, not the doors. The full doors and half doors seal to the same factory frame piece. Any top leaks are a top/frame problem, not doors.

- Half-doors are "almost doorless", meaning that if you do not look down, in normal driving, the entire door is out of your field of view and visually, it feels doorless.

- Half doors let you go "almost doorless" while still providing a barrier from stuff blowing out of the floor area of the jeep.

- Unless you live in a climate (no rain or snow and warm year round) where you can leave the full doors off most of the time, half-doors give you a LOT more flexibility. You can throw the uppers int he back if you travel a great distance and still have them at your destination or en route if necessary if the weather changes.

- Heat is no different with soft top, hard top, half/full doors. JK heaters blast and all tops seal well.

- If you get a lot of snow, the plastic uppers on the half door melt snow/ice a lot faster than glass due to the plastic heat transfer. Crank the heater and in 60 seconds you are ready to go.

- You can always find someone on the forums to swap with for full doors if you find you do not like the halfs.

CONS:

- You have to unzip the window vs. crank or electric, but seriously, is this a big deal? Most toll areas now have electronic passes, and if you are going through drive throughs THAT much, a little exercise won't hurt - get out of the Jeep! On top of all that, if you are hearty enough to take the other jeep personality traits (numb steering, bouncy ride, noisier than a car), will a little zipper action be a deal breaker, given the benefits?

Go check out a half-door JK before buying!

Great write-up... Thanks. I have checked out the factory half doors... very cool.... but have yet to even see photos of the windows for them. I live in the NW and most likely would only run the half doors in the summer. Summers are short here... so that's why I'm also very interested in aftermarket half doors. I can't see owning both types of factory doors... too much $$$. ;-)

This site shows close ups of a 2007 with half-doors, using the same (old style) interior door trim that runs through 2011. Not sure if the trim is updated on the 2012's. The uppers just lift off to go windowless - a 5 second deal.

Sadly I could not order half doors on my Sahara. Would love to buy a pair but Mopar is very proud of them and I have not yet seen much out there in the aftermarket that compares well.

Nice link. So... the windows snap in, straight down using those 2 pins? Is there any wobble when the door is open, or are they pretty solid?

Has anyone had issues with leaking?

I'm assuming the plastic windows are similar to the soft top window plastic? If so... they could scratch. Can the plastic window sections be replaced later, if they get too scratched up, or would you have to buy complete new "uppers"?

Plastic is the same, but if you take care of it, it lasts as long as the rest of the windows. Not sure if you can get just the plastic to replace.

They are rock solid - no wobbling at all. Go test drive a JK with them and see. Also, have not seen any on 2012's yet, so not sure if any changes.

I just went to the Mopar Jeep parts page and found the half doors. Pretty expensive but I dunno if there's anything good that is much less expensive. The small info bit says does not incl. 'trim panels'. I hope that does not mean the inner door panel ? Does anyone know ? I'm sure when you order your jeep with half doors all is incl. but what about the Mopar part ?

No inner panrl included, its another pricy option. I am making my own out of 16ga cold rolled steel, and 1 inch steel tubing.

So are the uppers (frames) made out of thick (black) plastic, similar to the Sport & Rubi fenders? They do not come painted?

Still wondering why the Sahara can't be ordered with the half doors... aside from the fact that you would have to forfeit the power windows.

I am "dying" to do just that... with or without the half doors. I have not seen any half door JKs for test driving period. The models that I have seen have been on the showroom floor and the windows were not on the Jeeps. In 2008, you couldn't get the Mopar half doors, (as far as I knew then).

Uppers are vinyl coated canvas, just like a soft top, NOT plastic. Same as half doors on a TJ.... zippered plastic windows that will require the same care as the rear windows. The reason they aren't offered is that as you noted, they aren't electric... As Adkjeep mentioned they work fine insulating, offer more elbow room and flexibility than full doors do, and are VERY hard to come by on a JK...

The one bit of advice I can give is that a member here had the Bestop element half door complete enclosures, and he was the FIRST one to sell them when the Mopar half doors became available.... Take that how you will... I don't ever want to say anything bad about Bestop as I feel they make superior products in most every case, but that guy ditched his pronto for the genuine article.... I have factory halfs on my TJ and would not trade them for the world... Wish I had them on the JK....

I see the half doors on the Mopar site but they are spendy and Don't seem to incl the inner door panel...I don't even see that part but it's likely just as expensive ...and then you gotta paint...Yikes ! Do you even really need the inner door panel to open and close ?

They are hard plastic and NOT flimsy at all. Infernogirl brings up another good point - unlike the full doors, they offer a great place to rest your elbow a little higher than the new 2011 armrest on the full doors.

Just call a few dealers and fine one you can go look at in person.

Well... I was really hot on these factory half doors... but not sure I can live with a Sport and don't want to pay the extra $$ for a Rubi. So I'm back to the Sahara.

There is quite a selection of half doors in the Quadratec catalog ... can anyone comment (first hand) on the pros/cons of any of these aftermarket half doors? The 2 piece Superdoors look pretty sweet.

I'm in exactly the same boat.. Curious to see what people say.

Edit: Just looked at the Superdoors and can't really tell if the inside of the door is 'finished', if you know what I mean

Why couldn't you live with a sport? You could get a sport, add a few fancy things you like about the sahara, have half doors, and pay less. Just my 2 cents

Decided against the Sport because of the fenders... the bumpers... can't get heated seats... no 115V outlet.

Are you keeping your current jeep? Or are you getting this as a replacement?

If you really want to pay $6k more just for those things, I would go for the Rubicon (comes with heated seats ). You'll pay around $3k more than the sahara, but for all the great stuff that comes with the Rubicon $3k is a steal. Just thought I'd give you some suggestions. If you really want the sahara, more power to ya

Please do post the results. Be sure, if you will, to ask about the inside of the door...if it's finished, etc. I looked at the installation PDF and it was only drawings but looked unfinished...hard to really tell.

The Rubi has the same fenders/bumpers. Rather spend the extra $ on tires/wheels/lift for the Sahara.

Those RR half doors look sweet. Need to do some research on their windows.

Yes they do. I just emailed the guy at their web site to see if I can see them someplace before I order. Too expensive to ship back if you don't like them...

Got an email back from the RR door folks. They are in Indiana and I guess I won't make the trip to go see them. She said she'd send some better pics and I'll post them if she does send some.

I'm curious about the windows too. I can't seem to find anything about that rugged ridge windows.

Half-doors are a purely functional decision. Painted fenders and different bumper, well... You can add heated seats from Mopar (factory) on any JK for a reasonable price. Also can add you own 115v outlet with a pure sine wave converter for about $100 and have a better system than factory.

If you like the factory half-doors them, the above should not matter because you could add it all to a Sport many times over for what the half-doors are worth.
