Hand tool set for the jk

I am looking to get a set(probably craftsman) mostly for use on my jeep. Brand aside is there a set out there that is recommended for jk's or is it basically take what you have and build from there?

Metric and Torx will be your friend. Cheap tools in the Jeep, good stuff in the garage.

I am looking at some tools I see at 4wheelparts. Coming from VW and BMW, some of the tools I had to buy were WEIRD and would never be used on an American car. Would be nice to have a tool set that would cover most of the jeep.

Well torx bits for one, then metric wrenches and sockets. 18mm and (I want to say) 22mm for the suspension parts and (I wanna say) 26 for the axle(?)

15mm for steering link and i used 13/16" for control arms as my metric set only goes to 22mm

18mm and 19mm for suspension stuff. I think the 19mmx2 would help too. I know my Mac.hanics toolset the 300pc craftsmen stopped at 18mm so I had to pickup the 19mm

Mostly metric and torx on the JK. If you are buying a tool at a time, you'll want 15, 18 and 19 sockets, and a T15 torx. Depends on just what you're working on, but those have been my most popular so far.

i bought a cheap torx set i think either harbor freight, or production tool even though i think you only need the 25 & 40(at least for the on/off of the hardtop/softtop)

Chrysler seems to love the 18mm nut and bolt.
Anyone who's installed a suspension lift in a JK knows what I mean.

US wrench and socket sets jump from 17 to 19mm.

HF carrys full metric sets, including the elusive 9mm and 18mm. Sears sells individual 18mm sockets but no wrench.

I buy 18mm wrenches and sockets at swap meets and pawn shops whenever I see them.
WHY they skip the 18 in the US I have no idea. European socket sets include an 18mm.

I just got mine from Lowes, cause they're close to my jeeps house in NorNv !

Jimbo, that looks about like mine. I have a full set of 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" SAE and Metric sockets. Torx sockets, screwdrivers, pliers, two full sets of SAE and Metric wrenches (one good set and one inexpensive set), hammers/mallets, set of prybars, VOM, shop towels, as well as miscelaneous zip-ties, electrical connectors, assorted bolts/nuts, extra oil and coolant.

Then my tow bag which has a 30' ARB tow strap and all of my winch accessories (tree saver, snatch block, chain, etc.).

Basically all of the rear of the Jeep, probably why I had to get the Unlimited, for the extra room behind the seat and under the seats.

On a side note: I don't necessarily beleive in "cheap" tools in the Jeep. I prefer to buy quality tools but they don't have to be Snap-On, MAC, Proto or Matco in the Jeep. However, a cheap tool will round off a bolt or break and if in the shop it is bad enough, out on the trail it is disaster.

Just my opinion. I would suggest purchasing a good quality tool to carry with you in your Jeep. I don't care if I am working on mine or trying to help someone else on the trail, I want to use a quality tool.

My "tool bag" on left has been upsized to a medium sized gym bag.

Husky socket/wrench set, 18mm, 13/16 and 3/4 box end wrenches. (For Lca, tb, suspension)T40 torx bit with ratcheting t handle, 21mm and 35mm to pull axle. Not sure why I carry them as I don't carry a spare axle. 2 recovery straps, 3 flashlights, air hose for the co2 tank, mallet, spare hitch pin, a couple bright colored blankets, channel locks, wire ties, hose clamps, crescent wrench, utility knife, leatherman multi tool, and spare batteries for handheld GPS/flashlights.

Still have room in the bag.

Need a JKU like Jimbox to fit that. The price was right (free) and fills about 20 35" tires 0-35 psi per tank. Been filling bike tires and my 33's for 3 trips now, still got plenty left according to the regulator.

nice setup Jimbox, I gotta get mine set up like that. I have some things, but not complete yet. Also, for everyone who has changed out their LCA and track bar bolts, throw in wrenches and sockets for them as they are standard not metric. The stock LCA and TB bolts are 21mm I think no? I also have a small selection of wire terminals, some short chunks of wire...lots of good info on this thread............gonna go back now and check out Jimboxs setup more closely......

I really like the 360ish piece tool kits from craftsmen, has nearly everything you need to work on your jeep both metric and SAE. I would also buy one good set of torx, or two, they are easy to twist off. I actually twisted 1/2 inch of the head off a lifetime warranty T45, guess I don't know my own strength

anyways, buy an extra driver of your choice and an extra collection of the common sockets to carry. Build your own kit as seen above. I have the basic tools with me that I need, but I wheel at a local place that I can be home and bring tools back VERY fast. I am putting together a much better kit for a trip coming up though.

Yeah, I mentioned earlier (?) I have some individual 10/21/22mm long sockets--just for the LCA/skids/track bars--

The only reason I've gotta lotta mobile tools, is I've been doing this a long time-

I have several tool/recovery "Cache" combos that I use for the length of time and distance trips I make, when we go over to places like Rubicon/Fordyce/camping around Bowman/sawmill/Faucherie/White Rock lake, man, I take my trailer and LOTTA STUFF !

When you add roll cages/chainsaw/(2) winchs/tool/recovery Full boxes/ HiLift& acc/fluids--YUP it gets heavy--about 5200 lbs, not counting my wife and I !!

Still got plenty of power/mileage--(just thought I'd throw that in) !

While I was washing her up last night I decided to take a few pictures of my tool bag.

Mike.

Here is a few items I keep in the under floor rear compartment, qt. oil, ATF, brake wash, jumper cables, tie-down strap, spare u-joint and pkg. of fuses.


Rear of Jeep.


Winch accessory bag, ARB tow strap, coolant and shop towels.


Contents of tool bag.


NAPA socket sets (1/4", 3/8" and 1/2"), SAE and Metric wrenches.


Screwdrivers and pliers are a mix match of various sizes/styles.


Almost forgot an important one, a 36MM socket for the front axle shaft nuts.
