Hard Top Hoist

I'm looking at a hard top hoist and it seems the top 2 are the Harken and the Racor. I like the looks of the Racor, however my garage ceiling is only 94". How feasible is that with a JKU on 35s and a 2.5" lift? I would be backing in, removing the top, and then pulling in forwards to park. I'm also looking at the Misch hoist and really like the design of it, however the price on the others would let me use the money on more toys.

Quickly learning I need to tell my wife I need a bigger garage to go with my bigger Jeep.

Have you looked at the one from Lange? The nice part about it is you can mount it on the front wall of your garage, and use the pulleys that come with it. It gives you a couple extra inches of height.
Mine just showed up yesterday, going to install it this weekend.

For what it's worth, I spoke to Racor just yesterday because of concerns about height. I was, apparently, the first person to ask how far from the ceiling the hoist is with nothing on it. The MINIMUM distance that the hoist is from the ceiling is (according to their service dept) exactly 2 feet. So... if you can get under that and lift a little, you should be good.

I'm going with the Harken because my rafters slope down by about 6" from left to right, and the Racor has to be level. The Harken can handle the slope with ease, it'll just lift to the lowest point - but that lowest point will be right at the ceiling. The only thing I'll lose is the storage on top of the Racor.

I have the Harken with 10ft ceiling and it's awesome. It will allow you to raise the top almost to the ceiling. I'm on 35's and mine is rigged up so I can lift it just high enough to walk under it and I'm 6'2". The only thing with it is that you have to make sure you mount it far enough away from the wall to lift the top to its max height. The rope from the wall to the rope organizer is the determining factor.

Lange does make a solid product. We have 3 different hoists by them. One is completely manual, then we have a crank hoist and an electric one. Let me know if you have any questions about the hoists or if you'd like a quote on any of them!

I also have a low ceiling. I did something like this:

It really works quite well, and can get closer to the ceiling than the hoist I had before (which is why I changed). However, instead of using ratchet straps, I used the cam buckle type straps. I'd originally used the ratchets, but they were too slow. The cam buckle straps take a bit more force to lift the top, but if you're a dude, they're super easy.

I have the Harken and as mentioned before it will let you lift it almost all the way to the ceiling, which gets you max space under the top for the Jeep. In my case, with a 9' ceiling, the Lange would not give me enough room because of the pulley and T frame, the Harken works perfect.

I have 8 1/2 foot ceilings and the Harken works great. Like others said you can get it within a few inches to the ceiling.

Even with my short ceilings I can walk under my top with it lifted. I am only 5'8 though.

Thanks for all of the opinions guys. Sounds like my fears of the Racor being too tall are true. Now to decide between the Harken and the all-in-one Misch. Double the cost but looks a lot more neat and compact than the Harken.

I recently installed the Misch hoist and I love it. You lower the hoist with the attach hand crank winch, attach it to the hard top the turn the crank and off it goes. It works very good and very easy. I would definitely buy it again.

How did your registration sticker get turned? That's the first time I've seen one on its side.

Well.... I bought the jeep from a used car lot and it had the inspection and no registration sticker. When I got the plates and sticker in the mail I went to install the sticker and due to how they installed the inspection sticker I could have installed it really high above the inspection or toward the passenger side of the inspection sticker. Both of which would have blocked what little of a window a jeep has. I read the info on the registration and all it stated was within a certain distance of the inspection sticker. This blocked the least amount of my view and half of that window area is covered by the dash speaker anyway. I have no clue if its really ok like that or not but I figured I would try.

I installed the Harken this weekend. Love it so far. 10-foot ceiling, not a lot of space in the garage.

I built my own as well.
If I had to do it again, I would probably buy and modify a Racor.

I ended up with the Misch hoist. Just wasn't a fan of the Harken ropes running all over the place. Hopefully I'll get it soon and can get pics up. Thanks for all of the help!
