Hard top then buy soft top afterwards

Went to the dealership and talked to a salesman who was really down to earth and wasnt BSing me....

1. I was on the fence with the dual top and he said save the money and go with hard top and then buy aftermarket soft top. he said definitely dont buy aftermarket hard top because they are "crappy". Any thoughts on this?

2. Also, he said he owns the non-premium soft top on his unlimited. he said it was tougher then the premium in terms of taking a beating. Any thoughts on this? He said the only thing you are really getting out of the premium is that it is made of cloth material and is stretchier than the standard sunrider soft top Is the premium soft top worth the extra $$$?

I have the Bestop Twill top which is basically the same thing, (since Bestop makes the OEM tops for Jeep). It's quieter, deals with heat/cold better and looks nicer if you care about that. I think the premium top also comes with tinted windows instead of clear.

I bought the Quadratec brand top called Quadratop and it isnt the premium and comes with tinted windows. It cost $800 and came with all the hardware. Dealer I talked to told me to buy seperatly too.

On our second JKU we got a hardtop and bought the factory soft top later once we decided we wanted it. If you go that route and have it dealer installed it gets covered under your 3/36 warranty.

Our third (current) we went with the Prem soft top only.

On the first part, the dealer is correct. It is much easier (and cheaper) to find a "new take-off" factory top or an aftermarket soft top (Trektop NX) after purchase. Plus you get the wiring and programming for the hard top.

On the second part, I don't know. I've never owned the standard top, and I try not to beat on my premium top.

I ordered a hard top only from the factory...
I then ordered a new Trektop NX from Bestop-outlet for around $600 shipped when they had a super sale.
I ended up trading the Trektop for a never used factory premium top...but it was still cheaper than dual tops.

I would (and did) go ahead and get the dual top option. It really isn't that much more than a top quality aftermarket softtop and you are getting a great top quality factory softtop.

After dealing with a not so top quality rampage top on my previous TJ, I would never go that route again.

Get the dual top from factory. My 2013 JKU got only the hard top thinking I could just get a used soft top after. Got a used 2009 soft top and it was the worse top I have ever owned.
Sold it and bought a Trektop NX. It looks awesome but a pain to take out windows and store them because of the ridged windows won't bend or roll easy as OEM soft top.
Found a Premium soft top off a 2014 JKUR brand new, seller never installed and was factory wrapped for $500. I stole it at that price and being that the Premium is WAY BETTER THAN ANY TOP I HAVE EVER OWNED with spring assist, I can lower and raise by myself.
The material itself is a good as my buddy's Ferrari convertible top with perfect lines and seams.
No leaks and I would say it's as good or better than a hard top.
I will rock the soft top year round. Its that good.
So with almost everybody wanting to find a PREMIUM top for a great deal, the sellers are wanting top dollar for it.
Only problem I had with new premium soft top out of the box brand new was that the right rear door surround small tab was cracked. It did not affect installation or problems with the top.

I called the dealer to fix under warranty and he said my VIN number did not include the soft top so it is not covered under warranty.
The premium soft top has Mopar stamped on the windows and various parts.
People say Bestop makes the OEM tops but did not see any reference to Bestop on the boxes or top.
I compared both tops and OEM is thicker, frame is much better than Bestop, the OEM door surrounds are way better in quality and workmanship, and I would rate the OEM Premium a 10 out of 10.

I got the hard top and just bought a used, wicked clean Trektop NX for $360. I'll be doing the install in the new week or so.

Soft Top

I think it really depends on where you live in finding them. I have noticed certain areas they are much easier to find. Where some other areas-nothing. I was able to locate a premium at good price but I had to look daily and jump on it as soon as I saw them because they would disappear quickly - especially the premium ones which after I saw one in person I could never consider the non-premium.

My mistake. Looked closer with my glasses and the window box has bestop. The windows have mopar stamped in them. Just my opinion that the OEM premium is far better than bestop fwiw.

Really? Sorry to hear that. I'm in Massachusetts and finding a used soft top is no problem.
