hardtop hail resistance

I would think the hard top would deal with hail better than a std tin roof car design. It's hard and wouldn't yield like metal.
Does this theory hold up? How do Jeep hoods hold up to hail?

Hoods get demolished with hail, the sheet metal on Jeeps is paper thin. Good excuse for a AEV hood if your insurance can be convinced to go for it.

The hard top should be ok up to a point. While glass reinforced resin doesn't dent, it will crack and or shatter with a large enough impact. You would have to see some big hail for that to happen though.

Hard top holds up pretty well.

Went through a hail storm a couple of years ago that laid down about 5 inches of pea to dime sized hail in about 15 minutes. The hard top and windows came away untouched. The only real damage was to the passenger side mirror and the plastic covers on the hinges rear glass.

The body panels took a little bit of damage and the hood (AEV) took some damage. I imagine that the stock hood would have looked like hell after such a storm.

My hard top has been through some hail storms. I was also sitting on it as I tied stuff to my roof rack a few weeks ago. I know it's not an impact like hail, but it did support 180lb. Fiberglass has some flex to it, but can crack. I can't imagine normal hail would crack it. If you have hail big enough to crack the roof I'd say you're in need of the hood and some body panels too if there is a cross wind

Interesting timing on this question -

We had some serious hail yesterday while we were out running some errands. Heard the small stuff hitting the hood and roof and decided to seek shelter. The golf ball sized stuff that came down shortly after we were under cover would have surely done some damage. Once there was a break in the storm, we made a run for the house. I'd be sick if the new JK got hail damaged in less than a week of me having it.

I couldn't find any wrangler pics, but if you google image search 1995 Mayfest hail damage, you'll see some cars that looked like they were on the receiving end of a Nolan Ryan fastball barrage. Hard to imagine even a hardtop could come out unscathed against softball-sized hail.
