Hardtop Installation by dealer

I bought a 09 X 2door w/soft top. I just ordered the 3 piece hardtop w/o the wiring and harness for rear window wiper/derfroster. (I had a 2001 and never used either one, so why spend xtra money now if not needed).
Anyway, I recently had shoulder surgery and am unable to install hardtop when it arrives (arrival date unknown).
The dealer advises it takes 3 hrs to take off soft top and install hardtop and installation price is $280.00.
With my 2001 wrangler, I could have the soft top off in 15 minutes and hard top on in 15 minutes with help from 1 friend.
Question--Is the 3 hrs quoted, inflated or is there more to the installation on the 09 than I can figure out?
Any comments will be appreciated.
Thanks

Removal of soft top: maybe 6 or 7 minutes to take it down properly and store windows, then I think 4 screws come out and the whole thing pulls right out from there.

Hard top install is 6 screws.

Yup that's nuts. When I got my JK I asked about the hardtop install since I didn't have my lift yet and was quoted an hour if labor if my soft top was already off. I told them to piss off

I agree with everyone here, you are def being held up at gunpont, with that 3 hr deal. Guess the dealer needs $$$$, It would be better to pay a couple of your friends with $$$$ or some BEER,,,,lol

If you bought it from the dealer I would think they should do it for free, they did for me. I got one ordered when I bought the jeep, when the top came in I made them put it on so I knew everything fit ok. Week later I took it off and replaced the soft top. Now 7 months later I put the hard top back on. It took me longer (a lot longer) just to get it out of the shed than it did to remove soft top and put on the hard top.

For the same reason when the dealership that sold me a 2006 Wrangler x as a dual top yet it wasn't equipt with the harness wanted to charge me $440 in labor to install the $160 harness that Quadratec says only takes 2 hours.

Hardtop installation

I recontacted the dealer. Now they will install hardtop for $140.00. I am seriously letting them do it, to be sure it is done correctly. That way, if it leaks the delaer cannot blame an incorrect installation on me.
The dealer is 60 miles from my home. Once the hardtop is on, will the removed soft top fit in the back of my jeep? The hardtop is being shipped to the dealer, so I gotta get the soft top home some how.
Thanks for yalls help.

That could present a problem.... You are probably going to want to remove the soft top prior to installing the hard top, since the hard top will have to come off to get the soft top out after you get home.... So, effectively you'd be back in the same position again, with needing to remove/reinstall the hard top. You can fit the hard top over the soft, which is how many are shipped, but Chrysler recommends removing the soft top to prevent damage, if the hard top is installed.

Hardtop installation on 09 X

Maybe I wasnt clear in my question.
If the soft top is off, and the hard top is on--now will the removed soft top and bars fit in the back of the jeep so i can get it home. I will let the rear seat up, but does that leave me enough room to put the soft top in the rear for transporting it home?
--I think it will but I dont want to be 60 miles from home and then have to call someone to come get my removed soft top.
Thanks

With a little finesse and moving the front passenger seat all the way forward and the driver seat up it will fit. It's not a comfy ride home, but it can be done. We put the passenger side window down and slide the arms thru the window so they hang out a little. It's definitely a 2 person job to get it back out which presents a problem for you unless you have a couple of buddies. good luck with it.

Thanks for the reply ref. getting soft top home once removed.
Now if I can only get the hard top to the dealer site.
The dealer just advised they have "no idea" when the top will be shipped to them. They report a BIG backorder and delivery time is unknown.
Thanks

Heck it'll probably be spring by the time the hard top gets in, so you can drive down there topless and pick it up, then put the softie back on when you get home....

I just got a 2008 3 piece hard top from a guy off craigslist for my 2010 JK and I had a soft top too. He put it on in less than 15 minutes, but he didn't have the wiring harness and didn't install it. If you are not worried about that then dont do it. If you live in the chicagoland area I can help you too, my buddies shop is in libertyville and he is going to install my cruise control and the wiring harness for me at the same time. The top itself doesn't take that much time. Its removing 2 plastic pieces by each door and inserting 4 small pieces into the back side panels for the bolts to screw into and just putting it on...thats it and then just putting the top on and screwing it in place. Good Luck! Hope your shoulder gets better, but dont take it to the dealership! thats an arm and a leg!

I did mine myself...it took about 90 minutes and a little fiddling with minor adjustments. You do need someone to help you move the hard top on to the frame...15 minutes or less.
