Headlights when unlocking

I've seen several posts here that said the dealer can deactivate the feature that turns on the headlights when you unlock the doors. Yesterday my dealer told me that they can't do that.

Has anyone actually had this feature deactivated? If so, what dealer did it for you? Sometimes "we can't do that" means "we don't know how to do that".

I camp a lot, and I really don't like lighting up a dark campground if I have to unlock my doors after dark.

My Rubi has EVIC and I think it's in the settings menu? Not sure, but I thought I saw it in there...

Yep, "Illum Approach" setting. Believe choices are Off, 30 seconds, 60 seconds and 90 seconds.

Yes, if you have EVIC, you can choose Headlamp Off Delay (how long the headlamps remain on after exiting your Jeep, you can choose headlamps with wipers (if you have Auto Headlights) and you can select to have Illumination Approach (which is what you're asking about.

You can set Illumination Approach to either "off", 30, 60 or 90 seconds, which will turn your headlights on for that period of time when you unlock your Jeep with your remote transimitter.

Not sure if you can disable or not if you don't have EVIC.

To do this, Enter your "Personal Settings" menu and select the "Illumin. Approach" to toggle through and select the option of your choice.

i hated my headlights turning on every time i used the keyless entry...
sooooo....

i had mine on my 2013 unlimited sport deactivated with a "starscan" i think.. .... not sure of the correct term for the device the dealership used... but once they disabled that i had to re-enable my parking light flashing which was disabled by default when they disabled my headlights from turning on with unlock.

note... i do not have evic.

To Turn Off Flash Lights With Lock -25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE

This feature will cause the turn signal lights to flash when
the doors are locked or unlocked with the RKE transmitter.
This feature can be turned on or turned off. To change
the current setting, proceed as follows:
• For vehicles equipped with the EVIC, refer to “Electronic
Vehicle Information Center (EVIC)/Personal

Settings (Customer-Programmable Features)” in “Understanding
Your Instrument Panel” for further information.
For vehicles NOT equipped with the EVIC, perform the
following steps:

1. Press the RKE transmitter UNLOCK button for 4 to
10 seconds.
2. While the UNLOCK button is pressed, (after four
seconds) press the RKE transmitter LOCK button. Release
both buttons.
3. Test the “Flash Lights With Lock” feature outside of
the vehicle by pressing the RKE transmitter LOCK button
with the ignition in the LOCK position and the key
removed.
NOTE: Pressing the RKE transmitter LOCK button
while you are in the vehicle will activate the Vehicle
Security Alarm. Opening a door with the Vehicle Security
Alarm activated will cause the alarm to sound. Press the
RKE transmitter UNLOCK button to deactivate the Vehicle
Security Alarm.
The “Flash Lights With Lock” feature can be reactivated
by repeating this procedure.

Forget it, this doesn't work, even though the 2012 owners manual sure suggests it does.... It just keeps the interior lights from coming on, not the headlights.....Bummer.

Try this:

Turn the dash light dimmer control on the light stalk all the way to the "bottom" to turn all interior lights off. That is supposed to kill the headlights on function, and all the other lights that usually come on with "illuminated entry"

That won't work. cause if you just use the key to unlock the door, the alarm will sound as soon as you open the door. In a quiet campground, I think i would prefer the lights

OP: I encountered the same issue this summer when on our 8 day family camping trip around Cape Breton N.S. I thought I could defeat this with the EVIC, but could not. only the interior would stay off.

I will try UpHillBill's recommendation with the light stalk dimmer settings.

It'll work - you may have to try multiple times though - kind of like how you can turn of the seatbelt chime too, but it takes multiple tried to get it to take.

Interesting. In my 2012, turning the interior light dimmer all the way "off" stopped any interior lights (illuminated entry) from coming on when unlocking with the fob. But, the headlights still come on (illuminated approach.)

I do have EVIC and have illuminated approach set to 30 seconds. I can turn illuminated approach completely off with EVIC though.

Did it a week ago on my 12 and it's working like a charm. No more headlights when I unlock.

@dads....did you ever find a way to turn off the headlights when the the jeep is unlocked? I've turned off the horn and the parking lights, but haven't figured a way to shut off the headlights yet. I do not have EVIC on my 2014 Sport.

Just tried it using the key fob on my 2011. By pressing the unlock button for 4-10 seconds, then pressing the lock, then finally releasing them: Horn stopped sounding on lock (another annoyance removed

Still unable to turn the head lights off.

^ Maybe try it again? The instructions for both the horn and lights is the same so maybe it will turn the lights off next time - or the horn will come back on.... not sure if there's a mistake in the instructions. Experiment and let us know?

Manual Programming Features with Sequences - Enable / Disable

On a 2011 JK and below the dealer has to do it. The good thing is they can, the bad thing is they might charge you for it. I guess if a shop has the same scan tool that the dealer uses it probably would work.

Do I need a Flashcal or can I do the same thing with a Bluetooth OBDII scan tool ?

Looks like the Superchips 3570 can set Headlamp delay options for 2011-15 models only
The dealer should have the same Starscan tool as US dealers use to take care of it.

I'm sure they do, but of course they never used it to change this option before

Maybe you can convince them to contact Chrysler engineering to instruct them how to use it. They should have the number. Good luck.

Funny, I was camping recently in Moab and didn't want to shine the lights into the neighbors tent in the middle of the night so I thought I would do the neighborly thing and open the door with my key rather than the fob. You can guess how that turned out. That's when I learned about the alarm. Whoops.
