Hello

Hello everyone, I am Robert.

This is my first post here. I have been Jeeping for 42 years and my latest ride is VEX, a 1983 CJ-7, image below:















It is Jeep number 26. I've had it now for 20 years, from a total wreck. It has 1,453,580 miles on 5 engines. I run the inline 258 6 cyl. I do not know anything whatsoever about the new Jeep and the Wrangler although

I do know about the TJ series.

I would like to ask questions if that is good here.

I am astounded that they are going back to the tan color. Anyone have any more photos on this 2011 model, tan color in a door Rubicon model. I'd upgrade depending on details.

Question 1:

Can you get the new JK in tan with the fenders tan and a soft top but steel doors, like VEX?


Questions 2:

Can you get a back up computer to keep it going when things are tough. I broke down in VEX in Mali Empire, Timbuktu in 2000 and had to give him a tuneup, but its just points and condensor and had no problem. Can you get a spare CPU to plug in just in case?


Question 3:

How much electronics are on the new JK? I only have the elect. switch for my ARBs front and rear.


Thank you in advance. I have more questions but won't flood the board/thread all at once.

From my view, I don't get it. Years ago, when I started Jeepin' as a kid, there were tons of guys like this 44 years ago. No biggie. Some work at jobs in-country, some out. I like being in the field. Fairly common.

For me, this is all noise, my Jeep is what it is and so is my job. I am here trying to learn about these new marks of the JK, and what might be possible if I want to step over to one and see how it does. That's the only reason I am here.

Great looking Jeep! I was at the dealer yesterday getting my ECU re-flashed and saw a 2011 Sahara in that color with the fenders matched. Don't know about the rest though.

Well, the first question is easy: Yes. The stock configuration before adding any options includes full steel doors and a soft top (the soft top only comes in black, though). The Sahara model has paint-matched fenders, while the Rubicon and Sport have the black fenders.

I don't know anything about ECU's going bad, but they're not like mechanical parts -- they don't wear out. You shouldn't need to worry about that at all.

Okay, next:

Question 4: Are the JKs pretty durable? VEX weighs 3 tons for overseas shipping as I have the frame lined with 1" steel plate? With the 12,000 lb. winches front and rear without this mod, it will pull itself apart.


Question 5: Can you lift them with 7-8" lifts?


Question 6: Can you get or run solid dish, narrow tires in 33" to 35" like VEX?

Thank you sweetheart and pass the word that I am a total noob on the JK and am most interested in this. I will be leaving on assignment in about 2 months to the NAZCA Plain of Peru with NASA so am trying to figure if I can upgrade, if I decide to, before I leave.

Time you get 1.5 million mileS on a jk you may need more then a new computer. My new jk is the tan color with painted fenders, oh and a little chrome. Oh and you can get a hardtop and air conditioning, which would very handy on your world wide travels. Good luck.

Okay, okay, this is what I need as I do not know anything about these new Jeeps. I have been through 5 engines in that period of 20 years since I restored VEX from a total. I run the inline 258 6cyl. I get roughly 220-250K on those engines, depending.

Ok, Have you lifted yours and are they pretty easy to modify heavily as is VEX?

They are Aircraft lights from a 737-- The reason is I and others work off the back when in the field, as in SA, at night. They shine outward to 2 nautical miles and the two on the front are from a 747 and they shine out to 5 nautical miles. Handy in the far reaches of the various deserts in SA and Central America and Asia-China.

You will definitely want to get the Rubicon model. You can figure out the fenders later.

It's not necessary to lift a JK that high. You can run 35's with a 2.5" to 3" lift. It comes standard with D44 axles front and rear.

I don't know what "solid dish" is but you can run any tires you want.

WELCOME to the forum! I would love to hear stories of your adventures and to see more pictures! You could easily outfit a Rubicon to do what you want. Based on the waterfall picture, I would add a snorkel to the list. The JK is going to seem amazing to you compared to the CJ. I had a 1980 CJ7. The JK, especially the Rubicon is way more capable right off the lot, but give it some mods and the world is your playground. (Literally in your case!)

Okay, VEX weighs 6 thousand pounds from all the metal and add ons. It rides like a car. I have 7" of lift as seen and use revolver shackles and 44" shocks to get the wheel travel. I have a Dana 60 rear, Dana 44 front and ARBs front and rear with 4.10 gears and 4:1 in the TC. I run Ford 1 ton DLs front and rear and CV joints at each end-- makes for a very velvet smooth driver.

I have two 1000 amp batteries, and 200 amp alt. and a huge stereo system( got a rock on across the Sonora.).

The lift is because in the jungle, I need to be high up and get over crap.

Solid dish wheels as on VEX, --i.e., solid truck rims and those are regular solid faced Jeep rims-- and that is what I need-- no spoke crap and city purty boy stuff.

Here is VEX with the matching 1944 Army Jeep Trailer that is lifted also and goes with me and I live and camp and work out of it in the field.

I see no reason why you can't weld to the frame. The rubicon comes stock with 4.10 gears and a 4:1 TC.

As far as the wheels, google the J8 model. Jeep makes it for the Egyptian military and it has the wheels you mention.

You need the batteries and amp and wiring to run stuff like that, but VEX is wired with 2/0 Welding cable--huge stuff. No resistance at the load. In this case, the lights. They were at NASA at NASA -KSC, covering launches of the Shuttle orbiters, and the lights were spares.

You shouldnt need to lift a jk with more than 2.5-3 inches of lift to run 35s-37s with stock fenders. These jks come from the factory with alot of ground clearance, and after only 2 inches of lift and 35s have more clearance than a tj with 4 inches. As for needing to lift that high, you may be able to get your body and frame way up there, but your diffs and such are only going as high as your tires boost them.

As for solid dish wheels, if you can find a wheel manufacturer that makes them in a 5x5, you might have luck, Id suggest looking into tractor companies that use FORD parts because some ford vehicles share the 5x5 bolt pattern.

Jks are very durable, an only get a bad rep from people that have never owned one. Alot of guys on this forum have owned many jeeps, and dont plan on leaving a jk anytime soon.

Offroad capability, not to insult your manwagon (it is probably the coolest jeep ive ever seen) but id expect that youve dumped atleast 20-30k into your jeep now. If one were to drop that kind of money into a jk, it would probably have no match in the world. These jeeps are light years ahead of other wranglers offroad, and are still extremely cheap to upgrade. The rubicons also come stock with dana 44s front and rear, 4.10 gears, a 4:1 t-case, electronic swaybar disconnects, and electronic lockers front and rear.

There are very few vehicles that can be defined as "made for offroad". Unfortunately, the Wrangler can definitely be defined as "made for offroad" by its inability to handle well on road

Thanks Tom, put simply, I need the type of tire rims that VEX has, I guess what I am asking.

Also, VEX had the first gen SSi ignition and I tore all that crap out and converted back to a 1969 points and condensor ignition. Tune ups no swat in the field, even in Communist Chinae passing through to Mongolia to the North.

With that said, can you get a main spare, CPU for the JK, as I have seen so many rigs of all types abandoned over the latest years with all the electronics and computer crap, that one little part failed at some point.

Why I keep it very basic. So, are they reliable with all the sensors and automatic stuff and so forth?

Second Jeep, 17 years old, 1967, sad I had to go back to school from working the ranch in Montana where I grew up. That was 25 Jeeps ago and 42 years past. Notice my Ramsey hand crank winch of some 800 lb, cap. hahahaha

I would say they are very reliable, but then again I don't think anyone has done what you are about to do. I'm thinking there are some guys in Jeep engineering who would love to talk to you. With your experience and resources, I see no reason why a spare CPU would be an issue.

Have you considered diesel? Jeep makes diesel JK's for export. I'm sure you could source one.

You are totally correct. Got it for free, if I towed it away, and have now after 20 years poured $23,400 into VEX. It is a hole in the air that I pour money into. But, I love the damn thing and the coolest Jeep I ever have had.

I found the rims. Standard Ford Truck 6 hole standard truck rims--same pattern. So took care of that. They look like Vex's standard Jeep rims.

Okay, I will have to study this all and learn more and you all are helping me tremendously on the learning curve.

I've been doing this for 30 years. Was a Failure Propulsion Engineer on the Space Shuttle Program, then went into the Archaeology program, but I still do imaging and high end visuals for NASA and JPL and the HST.

Its all been a Grand and Disturbing adventure............

This is one of the images I paint in photo real on my power Mac for the Hubble Space Telescope Institute and for NASA imaging at JPL (Jet Propulsion Lab).

I this case, a bolide impacting the moon at roughly 60 miles per second.
