Hello. New to the Site.Tow package info?

Hello all. I'm new to the site and the Jeep world. Had a couple Toyota 4x4s and done a little off roading in the past. I've been shopping for a new 2012 Jeep unlimited the last few weeks and have learned a ton on here, Thanks everyone.
Now to my question.
What is the difference between the tow package and the max tow package if you already have 3.73s? Maybe the auto transmission cooler? I know on the Jeep website when you choose max tow package it forces you to choose 3.73s. Could their be a new Jeep on the lot with just the tow package and 3.73s and it not be the max tow package? From 2000lbs to 3500lbs is a huge difference. And I'm planning on towing a micro camper around 2500lbs. So max tow of 3500lbs is a must for me. I'm confused .

Thanks for any help and info.

I'm not sure about max tow but the 2000lb rating is for the 2 door and the 3500lb is for the 4 door unlimited. All automatics have the tranny cooler.

With the unlimited you will be fine with that trailer.

The only difference (and "Max Tow" is only available on the 4 door) is that Max Tow comes with the 3.73 where the normal package does not. Basically the Max part is giving you the better gearing for towing a larger load. There's two ways it could show up on the lot though. Max Tow or Tow + 3.73 as a separate option if the dealer wasn't paying attention when they ordered I guess. The price is exactly the same.

EDIT: Max Tow basically means you can tow 3500 with the Unlimited. You can still get the same gear ratio on the 2 door as the separate option, but you can only get a "tow package" and you'll only be rated for 2000 pounds.

It seems weird that the tow rating drops with the 3.21 gears. Not sure what gearing has to do with weight, unless the 3.73 has a heavier axle or something.

I have a Sport with automatic and 3.21 gears, it doesn't even show up on the rating chart. If it's the same as the 3.21 manual it's only rated for 1000 lbs, 1/2 of what I thought.

Lol.

3.21's are sad

Lower the gearing better the towing.

I should have paid better attention. When I bought my 09 all automatics came with 3.73's, of course this changed in '12 and it became a $70 option.

Oh well I guess my little trailer will sit
