Have a 2008 jk wrangler with dana 44's in front and rear, when ever i take off i hear almost like a loud knock coming from the rear axel, i just bought it so i know nothing is wrong with it, ive heard from several friends that i could have lockers, its a 6 speed if that helps at all, the knock is consistent with start off, ive heard that if u can drift right and both tires spin then its lockers, i did so on gravel and from the start point to end the gravel was kicked up and left ruts from both tires all the way, does anyone know what the knock would be or how else to check? .. Also i would rather not try drifting on road seeing as its lifted siting on 35s , thanks to anyone who can help

Is it a Rubicon? I believe only Rubicon s have Dana 44's front and rear. Anyway as per the lockers, you have to be in 4 low for the lockers to engage with the switch on the dash. If it was upgraded to a front D44 then who knows what other mods have been done to the drive train. I would take it to a mechanic, it could be something simple or something serious. Remember with lift and tires it is going to have some sounds a creaks that other jeeps wont have. Good luck!

Its a wrangler and yea i got lucky and have the dana 44s, but besides the knock it drives perfect, and in 4 low and 1st i havent met something yet that i cant creep up with ease, but i just read that if i jack up the rear and turn it on and put it in gear and have one person hold one tire still and then rotate the other forward and if they catch its lockers so i might try that, but thanks for the input

How much lift you have going?

You check all the suspension components, something loose ?

where exactly does it sound like its coming from, the rear differential? other than the knocking have you noticed anything else? Im with FL in questioning if its a Rubi or if they just upgraded the front axle to a d44. FL is correct in saying that only Rubi's come with lockers from the factory, and that the factory e-locker can only be used in 4lo. however, if they are after market selectable lockers, they can also be used in 4hi (like arb) the rear could have a mechanical non selectable locker (you cant turn it on or off) and that may be what your hearing.

Is it a Rubicon or not? That matters.

You don't get "lucky" and have a front D44. If it's a Rubicon, it will have a stock front D44 and have stock lockers. If you don't have a Rubicon, it may still have a front D44 and lockers, but they won't be stock from the factory.

If you don't know if you have a Rubicon, post a picture of the buttons on the dash in front of the shift lever.

If someone installed an aftermarket locker(s) you have a switch somewhere to activate it/them.
Assuming AIR also, you have an air compressor under the hood?

Where did you say that?

Unless it's been modded, I don't believe you have a D44 front. In either 07 or 08, I do recall an "offroad package" that got non-rubis 4.10 gears, but I don't believe it got them D44 fronts. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

In any event, you don't have stock lockers. Someone may have put in a lunchbox locker, which could account for the thumping you're hearing, though it should be more pronounced on turns.

So you only get the knock when starting out? What about when going around turns while moving?

A manual locker like a detroit would make a ratcheting sound when cornering. Does it do this? If its not a Rubicon then its had some drive train alterations so who knows whats under there. If it has lockers then I seriously doubt the previous owner didn't mud it.

PS. you failed to mention the wrangler x thing.
