Have a JKU 13 sport going crazy with reading the forums. Going with a Telaflex 2.5 spring lift with Rancho RS9000. Need help with what size shock to go with.
i talked to Rancho they told me to run rs999326 in front and rs999328 in the back. i just look on the web site what is the models numbers for 29xl and 30xl.
Sorry for digging up old post... Looking at a 2.5 RK lift, either stock mod or flex. Want to run the Rancho 9000XL's and double checking on model. RS999326 for fronts and RS999328 for rears?
Makes sense, thanks for the clarification! I am a stock JKUR with only ACE Sliders so I should be a bit over 3" to start from what I have read. Always better to be a bit long than too short right? Next have to figure out bump stop size...
You can run the 29 and 30 shocks on a shorter lift, but watch the front driveshaft. The front shocks can allow enough droop on a smaller lift to contact the exhaust. This is why Rancho uses the 26 front shock on its 2" Sport Kit. You'll need an exhaust spacer or aftermarket drive shaft to run the longer shocks.

I don't have any contact on full displacement on both of my front tires. In fact there's a bit of room to spare. (I have the 2.5" tf lift netting 3")
A lot depends if you have true sway bar discos a bumpstop size, no?
So... I let 4WD choose what I needed (I know... Not a great idea) for shock size. I told them I had a stock JKU that I planned to install a Terflex 2.5" coil lift on. It looks like they sent me rs999328 and rs999236... Should I plan on sendin' them back? I currently have stock bumpers and ace sliders, so no real weight added.
Personally I would run RS999329 and RS999330, these are made for a 3" systems and work well with this 2.5" coil system. The P/N's they gave you are for 0-2" systems.
Thanks for the info Rancho! I was able to perform an In-store exchange for the models you suggested. Unfortunately, the 4WheelParts store charged me a bit over $100 for the swap, basically nullifying the rebate.
While I'm sure I'll love the shocks, everyone should be advised, if you order from the same place, know specifically what you want or you might get shafted like I did.

So forgive my stupidity but why is everyone saying 29 front/30 rear or 31f/32r?
The recommendation from rock krawler website is:
Generic Front Shock
Recommendation with 2" bump stops - 16" Collapsed to 28" Extended
Generic Rear Shock
Recommendation with 2 " bump stops - 16" Collapsed to 26" Extended
Wouldn't that mean the longer (larger #) shock goes in front?
I know this is an old thread, but the Metalcloak guys also, recommend the longer Ranchos, the 999331 and 332 for their 2.5" lift. I see earlier in this thread that RK also recommends these longer shocks. MC says their 2.5 will net a 3" or better on a JKU. MC's shock options in the ARB, and their Rocksport actually exceed the 331 and 332 extended lengths.
Soooo, does one follow Rancho's advice, or the lift manufacturer?
I would defer to the suspension manufacturers suggestion. Shock manufacturers will make "generic" lengths for various heights. As noted we offer two 4" applications and one of those 4" applications is used in 2.5" to 3" systems. :whistling:
Look at the compressed numbers too. The 31/32 are around 2" longer then stock (Rubicon) shocks.
2-3" lift w/ 2" bump stop to utilize all travel in the shocks.
Ah yes, the Rock Sports that go with the MC lift have a 16.8" Compressed Length (CLR) for the rear and 15.9 for the front. The 331's are 16.2" CLF front, and 16.8" CLR. So the Rancho's are slightly longer in compression in the front, and identical in the rear. I would assume this plays into the determination of the bump stop length?
Of course another question is if using all stock control arms, ecept the upper front control arms, if the EL is as important since one might not have all the droop using stock arms that you'd expect with after market arms?
I am thinking about going with the Core 4x4 arms as I like the option of red powder coat. They also speak highly of other brands, which I like. Only concern is the Johnny Joint, a little more shock and vibration transfer to the frame than something like MC's Duraflex joints.
this is a kit I was looking at. I really like how the rancho9000xl shocks can be adjusted to different levels of stiffness... I'm hearing so much about the teraflex kits with the vss9550's or the blistines as another option, anyone care to give some advice on which to get? I'm looking for a ride close to or even better then stock. I'm gonna run either 34's or 35's (thinking about 34's so I can put off regearing for a little while)
also, if I didn't regear would it harm my engine or put extra strain on it? or would I just be slower on road?
