Help me understand if this is serious damage or cosmetic?

I noticed this crack on both sides of the rear wheel hub assembly-07 X.

Any idea what part exactly is damaged and how serious it is.
I've had the car serviced at a dealer recently and the guys inspected the whole car and told me things were fine-so I assume that they took note of this.

If that is a crack it would not be a good thing if it came apart.
Pull the wheel off and check it, how many miles are on it?

That is a brake rotor, not a hub

That's your brake rotor if I'm seeing that correctly. If so that's an issue and gonna want to replace that rotor quick.

Picture no good, but

If those are the cast Moab (TYPE) any Alloy fracture/ crack is only a beginning of a wheel failure-

A dealer would never see that on a routine inspection !

If that IS a CRACK- I'd report it soon-or check all wheels, could be the result of using an air-impact gun on tire rotations/brakes/tire change !

Looks like a rotor to me too. It's time to replace at least that rotor and check the rest of the rotors and pads and replace if needed while you're at it.

those are MOAB factory wheels, so is that the back part of the wheel I am looking at or the rotor?

here is another picture, to me it looks like it is not the rotor? but then again i'm new to Jeeps and haven't seen what the rotors looks like off the car.

Looks like a cracked rotor to me. Not sure about a JK but rotors are usually not too expensive on american cars.

That wheel bolts to that rotor. Did your recently have your wheels off? Could had been over tightened. That sure looks like the rotor is cracked to me.

I should say your wheel doesn't bolt to your rotor but it tightens up against it. You have a problem there that needs to be addressd.

ok, i just inspected the crack some more and it is definitely the rotor.
I'm upset about this because I specifically asked the dealer if the rears need replacing and the dealer said no.
Now i gotta make another trip and waste time. No resurfacing here, brand new rotors please.
Are there aftermarket options that are better than stock?

you are right, i had the wheels off recently to get new tires put on, but it was done by a top notch shop-so I doubt that they overtightened. Plus the crack looks like it has rust on the inside, which makes me think that this crack has been here for a while.

It kinda looks like it overheated with the discoloration in the same place as the crack. Did someone drive it with the parking brake on?

I know my store offers performance rotors but in your case that looks like somebody made and error or there was something that caused that. I see neglect all the time but that looks like over tight or damage from another issue. That's not the rotors fault is what I'm saying. If your in the north jersey or north east Pa area I can help you out. If I were you I would go back to the shop that last had your wheels off or go to the dealer about a warranty I'm sure the dealer will tell you no go due to someones mistake. My store offers a better rotor like I said but that's not what caused that, unless you smacked a curb or something

I am in Northern NJ, you're saying you have a performance shop that sells and installs Jeep stuff? if so I'm game.

I have a auto parts store. I sell performance rotors for these jeeps. I can't warranty yours but I would be glad to help you out with your problem. I do install on the side. Shoot me a pm and I'll get back tonyou in the am around 8:30 its night time for me.

If you are looking anywhere else for them dont forget that its a combined drum/disc arrangement. That crack is running around the outer edge of the handbrake drum arrangement and is all that holds the disc/drum to the hub. The wheel cant fall off as the wheel studs pass through the disc/drum assembly originating from the axle. best case it spins free and you have no brakes... worst case it spins and somehow jams, or even snaps a caliper bolt off, allowing the caliper to swing out in the inner edge of the rim punching large holes into it (seen that a few times on JK's now from caliper bolts not torqued properly).

Get it looked at now... Hopefully its just superficial and has no potential for deadly consequences.

As to how would it happen? I would take a stab at off roading in slippery environment and the ELBD was actiavating constantly and heated the disc substantially, or, hand brake over adjusted or left on and over heated, then driven through water quenching it quickly. Maybe not, but makes sense
