•••HELP••• Problems with my 12 day old 2012 JKU Rubicon

Hi guys/gals

After waiting sooo friggin long to finally get my loaded 2012 JKU Rubicon
I'm experiencing a problem that had to take it to the dealer 3 times already after only 12 days of owning it...

This problem is sporadical but with the same symptoms
When I start the car it starts and after 2 seconds it turns itself off
I try to start it again but after 3 times it won't turn on again.
I use the remote start and it all works well...

They told me 3 different stories what the problems was...

1st time: Loose fuses
2nd time: The PDI didn't went thru and had to redo it once over.
3rd time: [Today] The key got deprogrammed as per their scan

The JKUR is at the dealer for a more thorough evaluation
I'm about to return this JKUR and order another JKUR from the factory
[The bank hasn't paid for it yet so it's still an option]
I'm afraid it's a bigger electrical problem and will eventually become a nightmare down the road... not what I want to be honest...

I mean 3 times in 12 days with 3 different outcomes?... I don't think so!

Sorry for the long rant
Would anyone would recommend me what to do tomorrow?

thanks a lot for your help

regards,
Charles

Hard call...Do they have another Rubi on the lot with similar options that you could go with? I would look into that or getting a Sport and saving the money to get mods you want. I know it's frustrating but there seem to be some electrical gremlins in those 2012s. The good thing is that you have a dealership working with you and it sounds like they want to make you happy. You've got choices, just think about it and sleep on it.

Congrats on the new Jeep.

I'm not an expert by any means, and I feel pretty good with a wrench, but I think electrical problems are the devil (says the guy who has spent the last 3 months trying to fix an evap system issue). I would want the jeep working perfectly from the factory. I know some people will say otherwise, but face it, if your only support team (aka the dealership) can't fix something on a jeep so new the drive shaft doesnt even look rusted, what are you going to do down the line? You want it working from day one. I wouldn't trust a gremlin-mobile. But good luck, I'm sure once you have yourself behind the wheel, any issues will melt away

I'd reorder and wait. Not worth the long term headache.

Also, check into your state's "lemon law" and make sure to document each visit and each attempt to fix your Jeep by said dealership.

Just a shot but it appears to be a miss coded or bad chip in your key(s) that will only let the Jeep start and then shut off. My 2 cents.

what esp said

but what has me concerned is if it starts with the key start, but not with key in the iqnition.. sounds like there is a short in the iqnition.. and if there are chips in the key. the chip is defective, just my guess.

Hi ESP

They don't have similar JKUR's because I custom ordered mine
Sport is not an option because I will go with 35" and they only have 3.21's

Honestly I'm leaning towards ordering another one tomorrow

thanks for your help

Didn't a member (forget who) have a problem with the jeep dying.
After a few trips to the dealer. It turned out to be a electrical short somewhere ??

My first thought, too. Jeep is supposed to start, then die after a few seconds when started with a key without the correct chip.

Does it do that with both keys supplied with the Jeep?

Couldn't agree with you more sneck
They told me about the evap nightmare too

I know I'm in the lower percentage of owners with problems but still frustrating to say the least...

thanks for your comments...

Just a thought, you could re gear a sport and put 35s on there for a lot less than what your paying for the rubi. Not to derail your choice but are you going to use the lockers and other options on the rubi?

It's a transponder issue. Did you try your second key? I wouldn't worry about it. It's not the nightmare you think it is, stop over reacting. I do however feel that you are dealing with moron service people and maybe need to find a new dealer. The problem with todays technicians is they don't know anything about what they are working on, just how to swap parts.

Hi Bill

That's what they told me as well today at the dealer but my concern is that after 3 times at the dealer already they told me 3 different stories so I'm a little concerned about what the hell is it because they don't seem to know,

I haven't tried the other key. Will do tomorrow and see if i keep it or reorder
It makes sense about the chip in the key. Now I'm more scared than before about the electronics on the 2012. Just imagine if this happens off road in the middle of nowhere....

Just want to be ready if they try a curve ball on me tomorrow...
All I want is to drive my Jeep....

cheers,
Charles

It's simply amazing what you can find in the owner's manual:

SENTRY KEY

The Sentry Key
 Immobilizer System prevents unauthorized
vehicle operation by disabling the engine. The
system does not need to be armed or activated. Operation
is automatic, regardless of whether the vehicle is locked
or unlocked.
The system uses ignition keys that have an embedded
electronic chip (transponder) to prevent unauthorized
vehicle operation. Therefore, only keys that are programmed
to the vehicle can be used to start and operate
the vehicle. The system will shut the engine off in two
seconds if someone uses an invalid key to try to start the
engine.
NOTE:

A key that has not been programmed is also
considered an invalid key, even if it is cut to fit the
ignition switch lock cylinder for that vehicle.
During normal operation, after turning on the ignition
switch, the Vehicle Security Light will turn on for three
seconds for a bulb check. If the light remains on after the
bulb check, it indicates that there is a problem with the
electronics. In addition, if the Vehicle Security Light
begins to flash after the bulb check, it indicates that
someone used an invalid key to try to start the engine.
Either of these conditions will result in the engine being
shut off after two seconds.
If the Vehicle Security Light turns on during normal
vehicle operation (vehicle running for longer than 10 seconds),
it indicates that there is a fault in the electronics.
Should this occur, have the vehicle serviced as soon as
possible by an authorized dealer.
NOTE:

The Sentry Key Immobilizer System is not compatible
with some aftermarket remote starting systems.
Use of these systems may result in vehicle starting
problems and loss of security protection.

Exxon/Mobil Speedpass™, additional Sentry Keys,
or any other transponder-equipped components on
the same key chain will

not cause a key-related
(transponder) fault unless the additional part is

physically
held against the ignition key

being used when
starting the vehicle. Cell phones, pagers, or other
Radio Frequency (RF) electronics will not cause interference
with this system.
All of the keys provided with your new vehicle have
been programmed to the vehicle electronics.

Hey Rubi...

Who's over reacting?,

I couldn't agree more about MORON service techs...
They don't like to stay on top of things and look for the easy way out
I will see if it is the transponder issue tomorrow.

Questions:
1. The solution is to change transponder or is it more complicated than that?
2. Could it be a short somewhere as well?

thanks a lot guys for the quick response

I'm feeling better already

cheers,
Charles

If I were in that position, after 3 try's with the dealership and they would be willing to swap then I would (my opinion) swap. Unless this time it is resolved, but if the bank hasn't come thru with the money yet this will be your only chance without going thru the misery of the "Lemon Law!"

What I still don't understand is:

1. If it is a faulty transponder why it worked before for a few days?
2. I was only using one key since I have the other one as a backup
3. Could it be an electrical short?

cheers,
Charles

The answer is simple. It's electronics. They fail occasionally. My vote goes with a decoded key.

Of course, it could be any number of other electronic problems, from a bad ground to a software error. But, the key transponder is the most likely and the first possibility to eliminate.

Maybe you better just down that first drink, they savor a second. Nothing you can do can make tomorrow come quicker...
