Help with Choice of Warn Winches

I've decided to go with an AEV Premium Front Bumper and I'm looking to put a Warn winch on it. I've also decided to go with synthetic line to reduce weight. Currently I'm looking at the following winches:

Warn M8000-s (approx $900)
Warn VR8000-s (approx $650)
Warn 9.5cti-s (approx 1,350)

Does anyone have any feedback/suggestions on these choices and do you know if they will fit on the AEV bumper? I've heard the VR and M series winches will fit, but don't know about the 9.5cti.

The cost is not the biggest concern, rather I want one that will work when needed. I don't plan on serious rock crawling, however, I frequently am out by myself hunting/scouting more than a days walk from a town so it must work when needed (thus the choice of Warn).

Thumbs up Welll.................

................... after much research, it was clear that WARN is the brand to purchase

Further, the M8000 was my personal choice and is what I have and am very happy with the decision

All three are reliable, from what I've gathered. The 9.5 will obviously haul more weight, a bit faster than the other two. It also has a thermal sensor system that'll let you know if it's running too hot, and is the best-sealed of the bunch.

The VR8000 is the slowest, but usually, hauling someone out isn't a contest. The M8000 is probably the most popular on the forums I've seen.

You really can't lose with any of them, IMO. It comes down to the type of situations you anticipate needing it in. And a lot of what's gonna help get you out are things like tree straps, recovery straps, a good snatch block, etc.

Personally, I'm eyeing either the 9.5cti, or one of the newer versions with a built-in compressor.

I had looked at the Warn Powerplant as I liked the idea of a compressor and a winch, however, it won't fit on the AEV bumper. It's also 40 - 50 pounds heavier than the other winches I was looking for and didn't come with synthetic line.

I think I'll pick up a small compressor (<$100) and keep it in the Jeep. I typically don't run into sand and I haven't encountered an area where I need to air down as I'm on rocky roads (volcanic rock, etc.).

Which reminds me...all three winches have 10"x4.5" bolt mounting patterns (pretty universal), so they'll all fit on your bumper's winch mount area. Only question would be if the exterior dimensions, long to long and wide to wide, would fit within the AEV's parameters.

And just from taking a quick peek at the bumper on the AEV site to refresh my memory, it looks like the only issue you might have is height.

Though I'd measure everything, just to be sure before the guy in the brown truck delivers a 100-lb hunk of metal to your doorstep.

Thumbs up

Good thought. I went back to Warn's website and found the following dimensions:

The smallest is the VR8000 at: 20.8" L x 6.3" D x 6.97" H
The M8000s is close at: 21.04" L x 6.3" D x 7.6" H
The 9.5cti-s is the largest: 23.1 L x 6.3" D x 10.4" H

I downloaded the installation guide for the AEV bumper but couldn't find any reference to dimensions for a winch. I also read their FAQ but found the following:

"Our JK Premium Front Bumper can be used with or without a winch mount. AEV can provide you with our Winch Mount which tucks neatly between the frame rails and is designed to fit most low-mount planetary winches up to 9,500 lbs. AEV recommends the Warn line of integrated-solenoid winches."

I'm still unclear if they will fit as they say "most low-mount". I'm new to this and not sure what they mean by low-mount. Does anyone have an AEV bumper with one of the above winches or know the dimensions available to install a winch?

JKU are heavy animals, I thought long and hard about winches. Ended up going with a smittybuilt 10,000 lb water proof one. Used it a few times, once I had to anchor my jeep to winch my friends tj up a nasty rock ledge. I am happy with it, half of a comparable warn. (I was actually going to buy a warn)

I do know, from the AEV site, they mount the 9.5 cti on their conversions, and given the dimensions the other winches should work as well. Be aware that the winch mounts before the bumper installation on an AEV bumper, otherwise you will have to remove the bumper to install. Not a big deal if you get the bumper and the winch comes a significant time later but a PITA if you mount your bumper only to have to remove it again a week or so later.

BTW, nice choice of winches and bumper. I think I'll be going in a very similar direction.

Let me know if you'd like a quote on these parts. I have the AEV bumpers in stock and ready to ship. All 3 winches will fit on the bumper without an issue.

NoTasker - I went with Quadratec for my winch (and a bunch of other mods) and Joe helped me out along with their knowledgeable staff. I have the AEV Premium Bumper and I went with the Warn 9.5cti-s. I received the lowest price around and they shipped it quick. It gets put on next week when my JKUR COD comes in, can't wait!

Good luck and have fun with your Jeep!

I will probably go with the M8000. I've done a lot of research, and I have found no real negative complaints about this winch. It is good on the budget (for a Warn), and it apparently pulls beyond it's rated weight according to a lot of posts. That's a positive since it's on the minimum end of pulling capacity for the JKU. For an occasional use winch that is high quality, this is the one.

I ended up purchasing the Warn M8000-s from Quadratec. I'll post pictures once the install is done. Thanks for all the feedback!

Looking at the dimensions, I think the VR10000 would also fit. It's the same size as the VR8000

Can I use a universal winch mount on AEV bumper. I noticed the AEV winch mount is around $135 USD. Has anyone used a universal winch mount? If so which one?
