helpless in China

I have an 08, 6-speed manual, X model, that I have had to leave sitting in the driveway, as I travel on business to China.

I asked my son-in-law to stop by and start it after a few days, and let it run for five minutes, just "because."

He tried one day, and put it in Neutral and said it wouldn't idle in Neutral, and ya'll have indicated on another thread that most likely he didn't wait for the fuel pump to stop its "prep" before attempting to start it, most likely resulting in an inability to start the vehicle.

Then my dad called today and said that he found it in Neutral and couldn't start it. I asked him if he depressed the clutch and he said he didn't think so.

I'm thinking:

A) My son-in-law left it in Neutral
B) Dad couldn't start it because you MUST depress the clutch (even in
Neutral)

Do you HAVE to depress the clutch to start it in Neutral?

(Getting reports like these, when you are half way around the world, is upsetting, and I need some intelligence here). Obviously my son-in-law and dad are not up to speed on manual transmissions and contemporary ignition systems, yes?

You have to depress the clutch to start it unless you are in 4 low.
