hi all! been on this forum for a while but finally a new jeep owner!

hi all, ive been trolling since this past summer, my gf and i have been looking for a jeep wrangler for the past few months. just thought we would introduce ourselves. we joined the forum to learn a little bit about jeeps since this was going to be our first. im a ford explorer enthusiast, and our new jeep is for my gf. we are avid camper/hikers, and we are also into mountainbiking and snowboarding, and her mini cooper wasnt cutting it, and everytime she wanted to bring her bike or board somewhere she had to take my truck.

like i said, im an explorer owner and an avid enthusiast, but i dont discriminate against other brands so i hope you guys dont hate on me! i can appreciate any type of ride, so im down for whatever is a nice ride, and i have always wanted a jeep. we got a great deal on our new jeep, its 2010 sahara 2 door, orange and black (we are die hard giants fans) with a hard top.

i would by no means consider myself a mechanic, but im a serious DIYer, and as long as it doesnt involve taking apart a tranny, im almost always ready to learn how to do it myself. i do almost all of the work and maintenance on all of our vehicles. ill post pics of my explorer sport trac and more importantly fro this forum, our new jeep in the morning when there is daylight to take a few shots. we look forward to learning more about our jeep, and getting to know all of the fellow jeep owners on the forum.

An explorer enthusiast? I didn't know they existed. You must love the new one.
My wife traded her '02 Explorer for a new Liberty. This month's issue of 4Wheel and Off Road magazine had a nice little article about an older Explorer.

Now, back to the Wrangler. I'm putting the over/under at 6 months before you start talking about your own Wrangler.

I can't argue with daggo's over/under.

Soon you'll be hawking parts off that white thing to fund new mods for the Jeep.

Take if offroading as is. Take it places you'd hesitate to take the Explorer.

Not hatin, just sayin. Over the years I've had a Dodge Ramcharger, a Ford Bronco, a Ford Explorer, one hideous side foray into a Toyota Tundra. Took em all offroad, camping, hiking, etc. In 2003 I bought a stock Jeep Liberty Renegade. It kicked the crap out of all the aforementioned lesser 4x4's. I've had my new Wrangler for less than a month, and can already tell it'll perform FAR beyond what the Liberty would do.

Just my 2 pennies.

Enjoy!

Just crackin on you, dude. Pretty awesome mod job on that trac, actually. Never seen one quite like it.

On to important topics...

One of the things I did to my Jeep regarding aux lights (I've got a pair on the windshield mounts, and will soon add two rear lights and another pair on my bumper) is to buy an sPOD. Expensive, but man...no more having to pass harness cables through the firewall, hooking stuff up to the battery, etc. Everything is run off the sPOD, and operated by a six Contura switch bezel mounted on the top of my windshield frame.

I'm generally an electrical retard, but this thing's unbelievably easy to install and use. There are several threads on it if you use the search tool (which will reveal the level of my retardation and give you a good laugh @ the same time).

Here's a link to the sPOD site:

Congrats to your GF on her new ride. The haters here are few and far between, but we will tend to joke around a bit. Unless you decide to bring an H2 or H3 into the fray, you're okay with us.

Congratz on your new Jeep! Looks like its in great condition, now let the modding begin! Your Sport-Trac looks sweet for being an Explorer, I have never actually seen a modded one myself but I have a buddy who wheels one stock.... Anyways, get another set of those Duratracs which i are on your Explorer and mount 'em up to the JK. Mango Tango looks great with a black wheel combo IMO.

thanks fellas, there was an open space next to the hill decent switch (or whatever the correct term for that switch is) that i was planning on putting the switch for the aux lights i plan on slapping onto the bumper. im looking for a set of black wheels online and on craigslist to see if i can find a good set for cheap. im a huge haggler and im always trolling for deals. i wish that jeep had stayed with the 5 x 4.5 lug pattern because those are a lot easier to find. thanks again on all the compliments for my trac too, i really appreciate it. just wait and see what i do to this jeep.

I don't think you can use that switch space. I may be wrong, but I believe there's a plate or something behind those switches...

Don't know for sure cuz I bought the sPOD and no longer have to look for places to put switches.

thanks seven, i was running procomp mud tires on that sport trac and just got these duratracs a few months ago, and while i loved the procomps in the dirt, the duratracs are a world better in every other category. much quieter and smoother on the road, geat in the rain, and they are absolutely awesome in the snow. i am planning on getting a set of duratracs for our jeep, but im not sure yet whether i will be mounting them on the stock jeep wheels or going to find a black set of 16" or 15" wheels. which leads me to my next question of whether 15 or 16"s can fit on these JK's without rubbing on the caliper. i actually really like the stock wheels, but the rim is a little too wide and i would prefer to have more tire meat than rim diameter if i can find a black set of wheels.

16's will fit. SOME 15's, such as the MB72's, will fit, while others won't. If you like a certain 15" wheel, just PM the guys here on the forum at DTD and they'll tell you if the wheel will clear the calipers.

You'll want about 4.5 backspacing to keep the wheels from rubbing. You can run 33's with no lift or a small lift; for 35's you'll need a 2.5" lift or bigger.

And there are TONS of black rims out there in both 16 and 15 for the JK.

Recent thread of 33" tires:

thank you willie, you sound like you are where i want to be when im 65, active and enjoying life. we cant wait to take this thing up to the sierra mountains this weekend.

thanks for the info wolf, i think im going to keep my search for wheels to 16's to avoid the caliper clearance issue.

Glad to see some other Blue oval owners. My 99 Explorer V8 has 210K miles and still runs like its new. Original trans, engine, only replace the camshaft sensor and spark plugs. Ford build excellent vehicles......
With that said, I CAN'T WAIT for my 2012 rubicon!!!!!!

another blue oval guy here too - my other two vehicles are a 2005 explorer XLT that has run great (has 112K miles and hopefully it'll hit 210K like your 99!) and also a 2009 mustang gt. Had to jump on board with chrysler though for the Jeep and I'm loving it!
