sorry if I seem off base with this thread. This is my first jeep after 25 years of owning diesel trucks. The diesel truck forums are generally about maintenance information and getting the most miles out of your engine/tranny. Seems waving is more of an importance here...which is cool with me...I enjoy the jeep wave too
As odd as this may sound.. you might.. want to.. assuming one is out there.. check in with.... a chrysler mini van forum... as they have been running that engine for years.
not a crack or joke. the 3.8 has only been in Wranglers since 2007. if you want a high mileage engine, research Town & Country vans.
regular maintenance is all you can do. it's no mechanic's secret how to make an engine last. use the proper fuel, change oil regularly, tune it up regularly, use correct engine oils, don't beat on it on very hot or very cold days...you'll be fine. they last as long as the 4.0. just use common sense with it, that's all.
i always had the cummins myself, the maintenance you are thinking of doesn't exist on gas engines anymore. spark plugs last close to a hundred thousand miles now, something we never had to think about, follow factory maintenance and you should be fine. 3.8 is a proven engine, many "in the minivans" have run over 200000 miles. check oil frequently though, some use quite a bit, mine has been fine with 30000 miles so far.
I'm coming up on 64,000 miles and it's almost 27 months old.
Oil changes every 6K, frequent air filters based on environment, diff oil at every other oil change, transfer case and ATF at 33,000 and again soon, coolant at 51,000, tire rotations around 5K intervals, and I carry a bunch of spare fluids/bulbs/tools/etc.
