I don't know, but I like to search stuff. I have a theory that Google is the all-knowing.

PROGRAMMABLE FEATURES
Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) – If Equipped • The EVIC can be used to program the following Personal Settings. Press and release the MENU button until Personal Settings displays, then press the DOWN button to scroll through the settings. Press the SELECT button to change the setting.
• Language • Headlamp Off Delay • Auto Door Locks • Key-Off Power Delay • Auto UNLK On Exit • Illumination Approach • RKE Unlock • Display Units of Measure In • Sound Horn With RKE Lock • Hill Start Assist (HSA) — If Equipped • Flash Lights with Remote Key Lock • Display Fuel Saver — If Equipped

Page 45 in the owners' manual.

All hail the power of Google :-P

edit if you don't have the EViC option to do all that, they call it the wheel dance method, it's like a code you do, like up down left right a b start on Contra, only for Jeeps. Just search that up.

You should be able to use the MENU button on the steering wheel and go to preferences to turn it on or off.

there is a difference between Hill Start Assist (HSA) which is in the menu or you can change with a key sequence, and hill decent assist which is the button on the dash.

Yes HSA is an automatic feature on both transmissions (unless deactivated). It's to get going up steep hill without stalling.

HDA is a push button thing for going down steep hill on auto tansmissions only.

HSA is an option that is an upgrade on some vehicles. Not all JKs have it. But here is a Star case that gives you the info you need. Also it works in reverse if the front of the vehicle is pointed downhill & trans is in reverse. It doesn't engage if the trans is in nuetral & releases if the gas isn't pushed within a few seconds.

Quote:
BNG is the sales code for the HSA equipped vehicles. The HSA system is designed to assist the
driver in launching a vehicle on an incline. If the need arises to disable the system, there are two
methods to disable the system depending on the vehicles equipment.
With EVIC vehicles:
If the vehicle is equipped with an EVIC system, the HSA can be disabled through the customer
programmable features menu.
Non-EVIC equipped vehicles:
1. Begin with the engine off and vehicle in Park (automatic transmission) or Neutral with clutch out
(manual transmission) with wheels straight. Apply parking brake on manual transmission vehicle.
2. Start the engine.
3. With the engine running, the brake applied, and the clutch out, rotate the steering wheel 180°
counter-clockwise from center.
4. Press ESP button four times within twenty seconds. The “ESP/TCS Indicator Light” should appear
and disappear four times.
5. Rotate the steering wheel 360° clockwise (180° clockwise from center).
6. Cycle ignition switch OFF then ON.
7. If the sequence was completed properly, the “ESP/TCS Indicator Light” will blink several times to
confirm HSA is off. Steps 1-7 must be completed within 90 seconds to turn off HSA. Repeat steps 1-7
to re-enable HSA functionality.

HSA is standard on all JKs, at least 2009+.

Well let me rephrase. It's an option that comes in a standard equipment package that almost every JK has. You could order your own JK with the optional build codes you want & not have this feature. But every lot regular build code will have it. And to come to think of it, I don't ever recall using it or feeling it used on my wife's JK or any JK I have worked on. But the Hill Decent Control I have used & I was impressed & like this feature.

I have mixed feelings on this feature... It goofs me up in reverse. My street is enough of a hill to activate it and I almost stall every time I back into the driveway. It feels like it holds the brake too long.

Its very nice at a traffic light on a hill when some putz gets inches from your bumper, an instance where you'd either rev a little to high taking off or hold the handbrake until you're moving.

Every thread about this feature seems to wind up with confusion about the hill descent function.
