His/Her JKU's. Does it make sense?

So I love my JKU. Well, so does my wife apparently. Have 3 kids (15, 12, and 9) and it can get a little crowded. Wife drives a minivan. It's ideal for us because there's plenty of room (kids have their own space = less bickering) and when we have family/friends come to visit (maybe 2-3 times a year), we have plenty of room to fit into 1 car most of the time. Great road trip car. Problem is the shaggin wagon is getting up there in age, kids are getting older, and we love to wheel on the weekends among other things that would be ideal with a 2nd Jeep. Wife really wants a JKU but is a little reluctant to pull the trigger as she doesn't think it's practical. Thoughts?

Haveing two Jeeps is fun not practicle. But that "P" word should not be used on a Jeep forum.

I'm in the process of modding my 2014 AMP'D JKUR - MC 2.5 Gamechancer ARB, 35's on Raceline Beadlocks, Genright AL bumpers, Nemesis AL flares + sliders, Warn Powerplant, etc. My wife and I like the JKUR so much, that we are trading in her Infinity FX for another JKUR (she wants a '15 Tank), which will also be modded. We have the full support of our 8 y/o, lol.

We've got 2 (a 2dr & JKU). Both daily drivers and we love 'em but no kids at home. It might get old hauling 3 kids around.

Mike got his 2013 in November of 2012. I thought he was nuts. Once he got it and started modding it, I liked it better. Then he let me drive it out in the sand and I was HOOKED! Fast forward six months later and I had my very own jeep on order. It'll be ten months old on the twenty-ninth and it's been ten months of FUN!

I gave up a pretty loaded Honda Odyssey to get it. Kids are 13 and 16. They have iPads, so they no longer require the built in entertainment system. And if they can't ride on a road trip without bickering, they can just ride silently. If they can't ride silently, then they start giving up iPads, cellphones, Xbox or whatever else it takes. I'm a when it comes to that baloney.

There are several other couples here that have two jeeps. What else could be better than one jeep but two?

My wife wants her own jeep. Mine will be the modded toy. Hers would be a mall crawler. She currently has a Civic and isnt so sure about giving it up. When it's paid for she will have her own Jeep.
Trying to get her out on the trails. No luck yet.

Love JKU...however with the 3 kids that age, you can forget hauling the entire family in one Jeep. Besides the bench on the JKU is not that comfy, and is at a bit of an awkward angle. You can fix that with some 50$ incline kit on EBay though...

How do you mean? Just longer bolts and a whole bunch of washers under the mounts?? I thought the incline kit added an inch and a half under the front mounts...

I have a 2007 jk and my wife borrowed it after I lifted it one day and the next thing I know we are at the dealer and she got a 2014 copperhead sport jku. Well now that mines up there in miles and driving hers, I ordered my own 2015 jkur. It's definitely addictive! we have a 16 year old son and two nephews 5 and 7 that we fit in the back.

I second this thought. After I got my JKU my wife wanted a Jeep but we still wanted some refinement. We traded in her VW GLI on a Grand Cherokee Limited diesel. She loves it and it has all the capability she'll need from it.

Your wife is right, it is not entirely practical. Unless you have a 3rd vehicle, 5 in a JKU is a little crowded once everyone has gear they want to take.

If you plan on off roading with 5 people in the vehicle....then I'd guess that a JKU is OK.
If not....then you just can't beat a minivan for practicality, comfort and convenience when you carry passengers.

Sometimes it's hard to get saddle time in our new JK. The wife and I are cordial about it . Our GTI will be paid off in a year. We may be trading it for another JK. Maybe a Unlimited this time. No scratch that. We have no kids (all 3 in college) It'll be another 2 door.

Life is too short. I'll be damned if I'm not gonna have fun to and from work and wheelin' on the weekends for the sake of practicality.

As soon as the budget allows we will be getting a second Jeep. It'll probably be a few years so Jeep better not screw them up to badly between now and then! We have a Chevy Suburban for when we all go places together. It's the only thing that fits 7 people (5 over six feet tall) in any semblance of comfort.

Wife has a JKU and I have a JK.

The good thing about it is one set of tools covers both and parts commonality makes parts store runs easy. The wife is familiar with both and can easily drive either vehicle when the need arises.

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for... but I have 2012 JKU Arctic and my mom has a 2011 Grand Cherokee Limited. She absolutely loves to drive my Jeep but it's nice to have the Luxury and Refinement in the Grand Cherokee. We even have a 1997 Wrangler that she drives whenever she can. And yes, that's three Jeeps! We are a Jeep Family!

Yes. But if you want to go cheap the bolts and washers will do the trick, just won't look as clean

We purchased a 2013 JKU in Command Green back in Feb of last year ('13). Although we don't have kids ourselves (two dogs though, so that sort of counts as kids...) we do haul our friends, nieces & nephews and other assorted family members as well as neighbors around town and on short trips out of town. A four door was clearly in order. We also wanted something we could take on long vacation road trips and the occasional off road adventure. But... Now my wife wants a 2 door. She thinks the 4 doors are manly and the 2 doors are girly. Whatever she thinks, we are going to get a 2015 2 door in Plum Crazy Pearl-purple as soon as Jeep offers one up. the 2 door will be her daily driver (6 miles to work) and also for us on weekends for tooling around town. The 4 door will remain for it's intended purpose: Hauling 2-5 people around and vacation trips, etc. So a dual Jeep househould will work out. You just have to define the purpose for one or more Jeeps and which models will suit those needs. As much as I love my 4 door, I think a 2 door will be even more FUN to drive around with the top off.

Wow, everyone for the advice! Well after much deliberation and thought, we decided to keep the minivan and buy a used LJ! 2006 with 50K miles to be exact. Already has some upgrades, mint condition, and the price was right. Figured we will continue to use the minivan as the family hauler, I can split my DD duties between both Jeeps, and on the weekends, will use both as weekend wheelers. The LJ will eventually become our daughters first car so everyone wins! And when we finally decide to retire the minivan for good and the herd thins out a bit (oldest goes to college), wifey will get a new Wrangler 4-door.

Nice. You gave me an idea. Maybe I can convice my wife to keep the suburban and get an old YJ or TJ to play with and commute back and forth to work.
