Hitch & harness questions

I am about to order a new 2012 JK Unlimited Rubicon 5-speed automatic with 4.10 gearing.

I would like to be able to tow a small braked trailer so I'll need a 7-pin harness at some point. I assume it would be better to order without the Max Tow package (with 4-pin) for ~$300 and instead add the hitch and harness afterwards.

However, a dealer suggested I get the tow package from the factory because

a) the hitch would be welded and not just bolted on as it would be aftermarket

b) the tow package would include a tranny cooler

From my research I smell BS (or at least ignorance) on these statements. Am I right?

Factory hitch will be bolted in with the same four bolts as the aftermarket hitch. Don't know about b). Maybe someone else will chime in for you. Good luck

As far as welded I am 99% sure the factory hitch is bolted. My JKU should be here any day now and I can let u know, but im sure someone else will chime in. As far as a tranny cooler I think all the autos get it regardless of tow pkg or not.

I got the factory tow pkg to eliminate hassle. I would not need trailer braking though. There was also an understanding on another forum that the esc only had trailer sway damping programmed if it came w/ tow pkg.

I believe they started making transmission coolers standard in 2010 or 2011. Chrysler had a recall about a year or two ago and installed an idiot light for tranny overheat in my 09 Wrangler. People's transmissions were getting smoked wheeling in soft sand in 4hi for an extended period of time and while towing. My buddy has a 2011 sport and has a cooler and no tow pkg. Don't worry about welded hitches. Bolted is fine as long as it's bolted to the frame and not the bumper. Mine is bolted and I've been dragging a 3000lb offshore fishing boat for over 2 yrs w/o any problem.

Tell your dealer that he's an idiot. They come from the factory bolted on.

x2. Factory is a bolt on config. I'm amazed at the lack of accurate information coming from some dealers.

They just want to give you a dumb a$$ reason so people who don't know will buy from them. My dealer wanted $725 for a hitch and slush mats. When I told them to keep them, they promptly reminded me that if they installed them they would be under 3/36 warranty. The conversation went real south from there.

Thanks, everyone. Just as I thought.

I'd forgotten about the sway control. Has anyone added an aftermarket hitch and managed to get the sway control programmed (by a dealer or otherwise)?

Does it require any additional hardware or is it only software?

Trailer sway control cannot be added after the fact.

Order the Max Tow Package for peace of mind and no hassle. I did, even tho I may never need it, its already there. The Jeep site has the tow info and sway control and electronic stability control. I think they work with the ABS braking system....

When I bought my `12 off the lot it had everything I wanted BUT a hitch. They convinced me to buy the the "Jeep" hitch and them install it because the computer needed to be reprogramed...part of the sway control business I think. I only pull a small trailer and looking back, for the $400.00 I paid them for a hitch and wiring harness it was a burn as the hitch is an easy install and the harness a plug and play. I don`t know if they REALLY reprogramed anything or not, the modern whiz bang electronics on newer vehicles is often over my head.

my big issue with the factory tow package is the Class II Hitch. For $150 I can get a Class III hitch, mounting hardware, and wiring.

Did they add the TSC button?

You are still limited to 2k for the 2 door and 3.5k for the 4.

I had the same thing happen as H2oman. I have no idea if they installed a TSC button. I think everyone should be required to spend 6 months on this forum BEFORE buying a Jeep lol.

Trust me, they didn't. It was a rhetorical question.

Order w/out and save some $$$

Trailer sway control (or whatever its called) is on all jeeps according to Chrysler.

All 12 autos have tranny coolers, my kids 11 doesn't have one.

I would think that all automatic transmissions come with some type of transmission fluid coolers. ATF gets really hot even if not towing. I added an aftermarket tranny cooler to my GMC pickup. It was pretty simple. I put it in the line after the factory cooler, so now the ATF goes through both coolers before returning to the tranny. I would compare the cost of adding one myself to the cost of the factory atf cooler before I made my final decision.
