Anyone buy and install the mopar hood lock that is keyed to the jeep. I just don't like the thought of some part stealer popping the hood and helping them selves.
No, but I have the Tuffy security lock. Works really well. If you end up buying the Tuffy, make sure you get the correct one. The one for 2012 models is different from the earlier year JK/JKU. You have to carry another key but the good thing is, if you get more tuffy stuff you can get them to key all the locks to the same key which is what I did.
Yes, A friend of mine just bought a Wrangler JK Sport and he had me put it on because he didn't have a rivet gun. It was very easy and had to take less then 15mins.
I wish I could give you some helpful hints to install it but it's so easy and directions are super clear. The toughest part is dropping the grill out of the way but even that's still very easy.
All in all I think it's 100 percent worth it and It's awesome that your Door and ignition keys can work with it. Having a matching key is definitely worth the extra money. Quality is very good. Find a Harbor Freight store near you and buy a $4.99 Riveter and your all set! Harbor Freight Riveter Set
The only thing that I am disappointed with is that these don't come stock from the factory... They really should come standard on all Jeeps
Anyway, that Harbor Freight riveter won't work on the Mopar hood lock kit. The kit uses 7/32" rivets and the max rivets that can be used in that tool is 3/16".
Just stopped at stealership and ordered the hood lock and key alike gas cap. Picked up the fuel door that he had in stock. Will be pulling the Allan screws and painting them black to match the rest of the black parts.
I'll say this. If you have the grill mod (mesh), the Mopar one looks factory against it. Love the cover on it and how good it looks with the mesh. Plus it is keyed so no 2nd key needed. I like 1 key for all 5 key-required things. :thumb:
This is the first time I've seen this type of Hood Lock. Where did you get it ? I think I like the idea of letting would be thieves see right away that the hood is locked so that they quickly move on and don't even think twice about messing with my hood or trying to tinker with the lock behind the grill vents. I think its a great "in your face" visual deterrent. :thumb:
Also......can this brand/model be keyed to your ignition key ?
I was looking at eBay. Cost + exchange + shipping + duty. Walked in and bought black aluminium fuel door already installed. Allen screws painted flat black. Hood lock and locking gas cap over night to dealer pick up in morning.
Stopped on way home and picked up the locking gas cap. Dealer set up the lock to match the jeep key. I also picked up the locking hood latch. Only problem the rivit gun I have has 4 different heads and not one is big enough to use those rivits.
I installed my Mopar hood lock yesterday. Instead of renting or buying a pop rivet gun that could handle the 1/4 20 rivets that come with it I used 3/16 rivets with shims. I used some silicone sealant to stick the shims on the back side of each hole in the frame and then was able to insert the pop rivet without pushing the shim out. It feels pretty solid and looks good. If the smaller rivets ever get loose I'll just drill them out and use the bigger ones but I don't think that is going to be necessary. The unit keyed to my ignition key and advertised and looks good.
Just purchased a set of the Black Rampage Hood Locks (Item # 76336) off of eBay for $76.00 + FREE Shipping. I went with these because would be thieves will see right away that the hood is locked and move on instead of messing with my hood or trying to tinker with the lock behind the grill vents. Planning on installing them on Friday.
just got the rampage locking latches.havent installed yet. was gonna go tuffy route but my local shop didnt have in stock. cant wait to put them on cause i had my battery stolen few dAYS ago and havent put in the new diehard till i get the lock put on
I went the cheapo route and drilled 2 small holes in each of my the latch assemblies and attached master wire top combination locks through the holes (2)X$7 from Wally world. It should stop the casual browsing theif and I know its not going to stop anyone with any sort of tools which I dont think even the $100 locksets will but it keeps the window shoppers out and will take a few mins to get both off. Theives want fast access and easy pickens anytime spent slowing their attack is more time for someone to catch them. My locks are black.
X4 Rampage Hood Locks
Nicely built product with excellent fit. Only challenge is for us large-handed guys to get our fingers in there to put the lock washer and nuts on the fender-mounted pieces. I dropped the damn things a few times but finally got it. Really holds the hood down tight.
