Question Hopefully soon to be JK owner

Hey all, my name is Mike. I was on here a few years back as paintguy83, but I think my account was deleted from lack of use. Anyhow, few years ago I had a TJ, and had to get rid of it, because I needed a truck for work....I have had the truck for 3 years, and found that I still have the jeep bug in my blood! I went and test drove a 12 wrangler unlimited last night and fell in love with it. Called the bank and got pre approved this morning, but I need to sell my truck out right first so I can use my built up equity.

Here are my questions. whats the deal with the tread lightly program? Is it worth it as far as a noticeable savings? and also, for those who recently bought new, what kinda talk down are you able to do on new, buying out right? I would have about 6 thousand to put down, the one I looked at was 28,600. do you think it would be out of the question to talk them down to 26...after down payment would make it an even 20 out the door? Thank you guys for any input...im excited to get back to drivin a jeep!

Mike

Welcome back!

Tread Lightly membership will get you a 1% discount from dealer invoice. There are also monthly regional incentives, etc. If you qualify for USAA (service in military by either you or immediate family member), you can use their car buying service and save a ton.

Best bet is to contact Pat@FieldsAuto here on the forum. He sells Jeeps in the Chicago area, and will give you the straight facts on what you can expect to pay for a new '12.

In fact, if I'd known about Pat before I bought my Jeep, I'd have bought it from him, hands down.

welcome to wf (again)! and good luck with your purchase and sell of your truck.

tread lightly is worth joining, only 60 dollars for a 3 year membership and you also get 100 off 4 good year tires. a lot will generally say you can negotiate 10% of msrp. so yea, 26k would seem about right if the jeep's msrp is 28k.

I would be very happy if I could talk them down %10. I figure being pre approved, with cash to throw down—the ball oughta be in my court

Good luck, and Tread lightly got me 2% under invoice. I walked into a Jeep dealership and said ," Another dealership was offering 2%under invoice for a 2012 Jeep, will you match it,if so I will put a down payment on it today" I did let him know that I was using a order number from tread lightly first.

ALSO, I talked to the general manager of the store,if he is not there, come back another day, don't bother with the young sales reps.

Good Luck.

PM Pat@fieldsauto.com...seriously. Even if you don't or can't buy from him, he'll give you some valuable info.

Here's a thread he started today...

I'm not quite sure what you're saying here, but I think you're thinking about this the wrong way. Talking them down 10% or whatever is the typical vehicle buying approach--look at the sticker, think of a new number, and try to argue to get the price near to what you're thinking.

As I understand it, the TreadLightly approach side steps all this. TreadLightly gets the price marked down to 1% below invoice (not MSRP and not sticker, but invoice) without any negotiation at all. Then you can even negotiate it down to 2% below if the dealer is willing to deal with you a little bit. Some dealers--like Pat@Fields--will just give you the 2% immediately without any negotiation. THEN you can sometimes try to negotiate even more, though I don't know how much success has been had getting below that.

Chrysler reimburses the dealer the profit lost as a result of the TreadLightly program, so it's as if you have a third party who's stepping in with some extra cash on your behalf. There's no reason not to work it this way because you'll never be able to negotiate a better result without it--the best negotiator in the world isn't going to be able to magically produce 2% of the invoice cost from Chrysler to put toward the purchase. It's extra money on the table for the dealer that would not be there otherwise.

You may want to also check on Chrysler's affiliate program and see if who you maybe work for is listed. With Thread Lightly, you could very well end up with 2% under invoice overall.
If your company has any dealings with Chrysler, you maybe entitled to buy a new Chrysler vehicle through the Chrysler Affiliates Program (also known as the Friends and Family Program)

It entitles you to 1% under dealer invoice for most Chrysler Corp. vehicles.

This is a good deal for you, and a fair deal for the dealership. No haggling, no negotiations!

The Affiliates (or Friends and Family) price is right on the factory invoice and the dealer is REQUIRED to show you this price!

You need a code to get an authorization # to take to the dealer, ask your HR department for the code. I am entitled to the discount because the railroad that I work for hauls thousands of Chrysler vehicles a year to various places on the East Coast.

Here is the link:

Thanks everyone for the info. I did send an email to Pat, and am waiting on a response. The %10 off sticker was just a number I have been hearing. I think I will sign up for the tread lightly program and hope whatever the %1 below invoice is, is appealing. Gotta be ALOT better than sticker, cause dealers gotta make money! I work for my parents in the family company, and I know for a fact we have no dealings with Chrysler...wish we did, but we dont lol Thank you again everyone for your input.....now just to find out what the invoice price is hahaha

I can afford full sticker, BUT I dont want my payment to go through the roof either. So if it came down to it, id just keep my truck. If I could get a bargain, and not have my payments sky rocket too much....Id be happy to open the garage and see a jeep over a chevy

you are in a GREAT position if it means you don't NEED this jeep. well none of us NEED it, but in your case, you seem content either way, that'll give you the upper hand in the battle with the stealership.

yea I absolutely love my truck, ive had it dyno tuned, ram air hood, small lift....it is really sharp and man I just love it, but right now it has 122 thousand on it, and I figure if I drive it til its paid for next june, It will have 150+thousand on it and I'll loose alot of equity. Only problem is, is I have to sell it out right, dealer yesterday offered me 7 for it...which isnt bad considering I only owe 3500, but it blue books private party for 11200....so If I could sell it for 9800-10000, Id have a good chunk of change to throw down....Ive never looked at other vehicles and not wanted to get rid of what I already have lol but I know with how much I liked my TJ, im going to like the JK all the more

the dealer offered me 4k at first under my trade in value. I got back up and over my trade in value after haggling for about an hour. but I use (and basically every reputable dealer) NADA values. they are generally better (for the consumer looking to trade or sell, anyway). try that, usually get around 1-2k higher than kbb.

yes, you'll love owning a JK! even any jeep for that matter, just nice to have that extra 85 hp and 40tq under the hood with the 12's. everyone stares and you know everyone wants one, including the toyo FJ's and land rovers, range rovers, basically anyone without a wrangler

keep us updated.

I def will, I appreciate all of the feedback! These new ones sure are pricy! I just talked to pat@fields auto, and he says im lookin at right around 27500....which I guess isnt bad, but that'd increase my payment $100 a month...not horrible, but more than what I was looking to spend! I wish I could justify a 2 door...I could get alot of jeep for at a 2 door price
