Horn Delay - 2011 Wrangler

Is it just me, or has anybody else noticed that on the 2011 Wrangler, when you hit the horn button, there is a split-second delay before the horn actually sounds.

It seems like the horn is computer controlled, as is so much other stuff on the new Wranglers.

Even though the delay is only a split-second, it is very noticeable, and annoying to me.

Is there anyway to eliminate this "horn delay"?

Mabar

I really don't know the answer to this, but it's been my understanding that air pressure needs to build, thus a slight delay. I'm no horn expert though. I've never taken one apart.

You could play around with the case on the steering wheel. It's possible something is blocking it.

You could also consider an aftermarket horn. I like that Dukes of Hazzard sh*t personally

Nope, not air pressure. There was the same delay with the original factory horn. It seems to be a computer-controlled delay. Only a split-second, maybe a tenth of a second or so, but it annoys me.

In that case, maybe it's because the switch sends a signal to the computer, then the computer actually sounds the horn?

I just went outside and started honking mine. I think it's the airbag. At first I got nothing trying to do a quick "beep beep" so I layed on it. Then a quick beep was manageable without delay.

Either the system needs warmed up, or that bag or something in the steering wheel needs smashed.

I got my 11 rubi in december and a few weeks ago I finally had to use the horn. I noticed the delay but more troubling to me was the actual sound it made. Some one pulled out in front of me coming out of a wal-mart parking lot and once the horn made its pitfull sound I was redfaced from people on the sidewalk doubled up laughing at my effeminate 'merf' sound coming from such a manly man vehicle

I wish there was a way to disable it since their expensive to replace I hear. If that is possible then hope u can pay up. Yah I think the horn is sh*t so I got an air horn. Works 10X better and its funny watching people jump when u use it. Any way to change the horn? Any place that's good to buy them? Would it look good if I had it sound like a cruse liner?

I noticed the delay also, don't really mind it. As far as the sound of the horn... I actually like it. I find it funny that this "rugged" jeep has such a flimsy sounding horn and laugh at myself whenever I use it, but that's just me.

Yea, next time I use it I'll be laughing also. Probably right before I hit the horn button and maybe even roll down the window and say 'sorry'

Probably has something to do with the CanBus system.
If you don't know what that is, think HAL 9000, but for your Jeep.

Mik,

Like you I was very embarassed by my wimpy horn. I literally just finished installing the PIIA 400/500 there are several threads on this and the most recent one posted yesterday was the rout I followed. It took me all of 2 hrs to complete and 30 mins of that was a neighbor chatting and keeping me off task. The new horns sound great and I can't wait to cruise Wal-Mart so I can lay on it. And yes i have the delay on my 2010 as well....

I'm happy with my horn--

All the NorNv mustangs know my yellow JKu and the melodius,"faint" sound of my stock horn-can't changeit now, although

I have a "Raging Bull" horn when I need something louder !!

I have found if you press on the outer edge of the horn instead of right in the middle of the wheel it seems to work better

You guys complaining of the sound was their only one original horn or two? I have one that mounts behind the front bumper on the ends of the chassis rail and another up behind the passenger side (Drivers side for you lot) headlight. The dual horns are different frequencies and together dont sound to bad.

And definately are not quiet!

In the US, we only get one, low-note, factory horn with the Wrangler. Very wimpy sounding horn. You seem to have two horns, one low-note, and one high-note, which makes a much, much better sounding horn.

If you unplug one of your horns, you will hear what a wimpy sound, just one horn makes

I must be really lucky or I live in a city where people can't drive. My horn sounds like crap but the response isn't delayed. I sort of want my 1991 jag XJS horn cause I scared 6 girls in a parade. I couldn't stop laughing as I watched all of them jump. They were all smokin hot too. Now that's what kind of horn I want in my jeep.

My 2011 has a definite delay. Even after the new horns installed. I think it's annoying too!

hey all -
I drove a 99 TJ for a few years and loved it. Bought it from my dad and a year later it needed a new transmission.
Anyway I now own an 11 wrangler and I'm really disappointed in the horn. There's a definite lag, and for a manly car it's pretty wimpy. I'm pretty embarrassed every time I have to honk. Also, if anyone else drove one of the older jeeps like me you'll remember that it was way easier to press the horn in the older models... Any idea why this is?
I don't know anything about cars so I don't know if I've got any options to fix this... so I figure if anyone knows, it'll be someone on this forum. thanks!

I have a Hornblasters Train horn installed. Compressor is down in-front of the muffler, makes it sound like a diesel lol
