How close can you kit out a Sport S to a Sahara?

In my ongoing research for a new Jeep, Im undecided on wether to get a Sahara or to upgrade a Sport S to almost Sahara level. I dont want a lot of the Sahara stuff like 18" wheels, color top, leather seats, navi and the like. When I went up to the dealer and had him run a build sheet for me, the only thing that it looks like that I can't get on a Sport S is an auto starter which I would like and heated seats. Is that true?
Really, the only "non negotiables" I want are a black hard top, auto tranny, max tow, bluetooth connectivity group, and LSD, which all look like they are all available on the Sport S. Is there some hidden option for heated seats and a starter for the S package as well? I know I can go aftermarket for the starter (or at least I hope I can), but the heated seats are harder to come by after its built. After pricing them both out using the info from Milous, if I skip those last two options, I could probably save myself a good $2-3k. What options that are standard on a Sahara aren't available to the Sport that makes up that $2-3k difference in price?

I purchased a Unlimited Sport - the S. Everything on the Sahara can be bought off of Craigslist for 1/4 of the new price and most parts were taken off with less then 1k miles. I'm picking up side steps tonight for 130.00 and a set of tires and rims with 6K miles for 300.00. You are like me brotha, very smart.

pretty sure besides the color matched top/fenders, and the heated seats and wheels its all the same. so in terms of actual vehicle function, its the exact same, save for the 18inch wheels. its all just creature comforts and looks

You can build your jeep just like at the dealer on edmunds.com or a similar site. That way you can see all the available or not options for each model

I built my sport pretty much all out minus a few things.....you are correct in the leather and navi not being a factory oprion....as far as I remember the remote start and heated seats are not either.

Aftermarket heated seat kits are readily available. Take a look at Quadratec.com.

my 08 Sahara also came with power windows and i like that feature since I have full size doors. when i take top off, i roll all windows down.

I Didn't see any sports with that when I was looking, but i was only looking at 07-10 models.

Don't know about 11 or 12 models.

See, I dont even want the side steps. If I was going to get the Sahara, I was probably going to take them off anyway. I probably should have said "how many of these creature comforts are only available on the Sahara". Like what else other than steps and wheels? Is it the same console? Same dash? Same door arm rests? Same storage areas? Is the interior basically identical other than the seats (leather/not)? Stuff like that. I know most of these questions can be answered by simply going back up to the dealer to take a look at one, but time is tight lately and I just havent gotten around to it.

I *think* power windows/locks are standard on all models with the full doors. Can anyone verify that? If not, that is also a non-negotiable, but I didnt include that because I was assuming it was a standard thing now

interior is the same. it really is just the 18s (same size rubber although i dont know if its the sra's or bfgs) its all just creature comforts, and even then not many (nav and leather heated seats). Most of the extra cost on the sahara is options and extras. if you just want the basic "extras" like power windows and ac, get a sport. you can still get it with a full electronics package, and leather trimmed steering wheel and shifters.

Also see my posts above...you can build and compare all the options on the site I listed....also power windowd etc are not standard on the sport its an option.

In teriors are the same ...just options for leather/power windows/auto tranny/chrome trin shift knob etc.....the leather and navi as well as heated seats and the 18 in wheels/ painted top and fenders are not available to add on the sport. Maybe a few other things....check the site to build what you want......

Main thing with the sport is you need to add most things as an option...almost everthing but not all can be added to make it like a sahara

Heated seats, leather, remote start, auto temp control, Nav are the things you cannot order on the Sport S, all other Sahara features you can get.

I was in the same boat but did care about the leather seats, heated seats, etc. Did want the nav but oh well. Really prefered the look of the Sport over the Sahara so I went that way and "built a Sahara" in some regards

You might be able to buy many of the Sahara upgrades on Craigslist, but at the end of the day, if you go to sell it, you'll have to sell it as a Sport model and the selling price that goes along with it. If I were looking to buy a Sahara, I want a Sahara from the factory, not a first buyer, upgraded Sport.

Not trying to offend, but that's the reality.

Screw that, I'm going to add a rubicon sticker to mine when I sell it, mark up that resell baby!

Thanks, yall. I think youve swayed me back towards the Sport. If the only things not available on the Sport vs Sahara are

Leather seats - meh, never cared for leather. Gets too hot in the summer, especially with the top off sitting in the direct sun
Heated seats - would be nice, but it definitely could be done without
Fancy Navi - I have a smart phone and a GPSr for the woods
Auto Climate - I am completely capable of changing the heater/AC to what I want it set at
Auto headlights - Its dark? turn them on. Its light? Turn them off
18s - I want to dump the wheels and put different rims on anyway
painted top/fenders - I want them black. Looks too much like a G wagon or something else all painted. Doesnt look like a Jeep

Everything else that I want I can Kit up and save myself $2500.

That was the only thing that I was considering before I started this comparo. If I was to resell it, how much of a hit would I take if I had to trade/sell it down the line? Realizing I am hopefully going to keep it for a good long time the difference in trade/resell shouldnt be that big of a deal for me. If I was going to trade it in within 2-3 years or so, then sure, the difference would be substantial. However, I am hoping to keep it for 5+ years like the rest of my vehicles and by that time it may be closer between the two

Also remember, most of the things on that list are NOT standard. Sure navigation is nice (if you don't mind spending $1,800). Heated seats are also nice ($250), leather seats ($900), remote start ($200), auto climate control ($155). Before you know it you are looking at a $33K-$35K Jeep, which is almost insane. I was out the door exactly as I wanted equipped for just over $26K, that leaves a LOT of money for options maybe I DO want (tires, lift, rims, etc.). Everything comes with a price tag.

About the only thing the Sahara came with standard that I wanted was the power inverter plug, that I do miss. The other stuff I really didn't want or need.

yeah, srsly. Im looking at an unlimited, so it will be a little more than that, but with the ol Affilate Program, it will be right around $30 the way I just set it up. Better than the $33k for virtually the same Sahara.
Isnt that inverter plug with the connectivity group? I did want that, but I do have an inverter that I tote around with me anyway, so its not a deal breaker.

That is the way it is, but the reduced resell value is more than made up for by the reduced purchase price. If the Sport is $30k and the Sahara is $35k and in 5 years the resale is $24k for the Sport and $27k for the Sahara he's still ahead $2k plus a few hundred dollars in saved interest on the loan.

This might help you out. Someone posted this a while ago and I can't attach the PDF so remove the spaces as needed and you can compare all the different models including RHD.

I looked hard at both.... Depending on what you want, the Sport S is a really good value.
Here is what the Sahara has over the Sport S as standards:

Auto headlights
Hood insulation
Upgraded "Rubi" shocks
115v outlet
Silver bumper inserts
Standard side steps (optional on Sport S)
Painted fenders
18 inch wheels vs 17 inch wheels (same overall wheel size)
Choice of black or saddle interior (black only for Sport)
7 speaker system with sat radio (optional on Sport S)

Here are the additional options:
Option for painted hard top/dual tops with painted hard top
Option for navigation system
Option for heated leather
Option for heated cloth
Option for climate control
Option for remote start

For me, the factory installed heated leather seats in saddle, along with the remote start for $979 (invoice), plus the stock upgraded shocks and 115v outlet were the deciding factors. Well..that and having the option of a painted HT...it is overpriced...but on some colors, it really looks good. I'm passing on the nav and climate control.....and I don't really car for the headlights....I can do that myself.

Not offended at all. When I was buying I only wanted the side steps and Rims. I just couldn’t justify spending 3K more when I could buy them on Craigs for less than 500. All the rest of the features are to luxuries for my standards. Not worried about making money off the options when I sale, I can afford to waste 500. Thats a lot less than other who mod the hell out of there Jeeps and loss thousands at sale.

I got excited when I saw the section in the manual about it. I ran out to the garage and looked and sadly it was just an IOU space

That's being very generous. You will actually run a lot larger deficit on a loaded Sahara versus a stock Sport than $2K after 5 years. KBB lists a $5K to $6 differential on a 2007 comparison. A 5 year old stock 2 door sport has a private resale of around $17K in good condition. A Sahara is up around $22K. Still can't believe the resale values on these vehicles!!!

Invoice on a 2-Door '12 Sport starts at roughly $22.5K and $28.7K on a Sahara, so you are seeing a depreciation of approx. $5K on the Sahara and $6K on the Sport. So you would not only be in the hold $1K in comparison, but you would add on the cost of after market purchases to make it 'Sahara' like. Of course, these figures are with the options discussed in the thread, and could vary the price if some others were added or subtracted.

If you are looking at a new vehicle as an investment you have poor choices....I would never buy a new car based on what ill sell it for later....pay as little as you can for what you want and be happy.

I just ordered a JKU Sport S last week with everything you have mentioned. But of course no heated seats or remote start. Talked to my dealer and am having them install the heated seats and remote start so it would be covered by the warranty. Like you I like the black top and fenders.

Shocks on Sahara

Hey, I've been going through this same debate...

I came up with everything that you all mentioned.

***One thing I didn't see anyone mention that IS something to think about is Ground Clearance / Shocks....

Ground Clearance:

-Sport S. 8.7 inches

-Sahara 10.2 inches

The Sahara has the upgraded Shocks and Monotube Shocks absorbers.

The only place I could find this was when I did the "Build Your Own" online, then under all the specs you can find this info under the heading: Dimensions & Capabilities / Exterior Dimensions.

I'm still leaning towards the Sport S. I'll probably upgrade the Shocks and suspension.

Hope this helps someonehttp://www.wranglerforum.com/images/smilies/action-smiley-035.gif
