So i got two dogs that love going for rides with the top down, however, sometimes they get a little excited and look like they want to bounce right out! How do you tether your dogs in without running risk of hanging your dog if they jump? Any ideas would be appreciated.:thumb:
Do you just put a couple safari straps wrapped around the roll bars?
I put a bungie between the metal hold downs on rear seat when its flipped up (not the floor of the bed). I have a 6' leash with a "traffic handle"- a handle about 12" from the leash collar hook. (So you you keep them on a literal short leash when walking through crowds). I put the handle on the short side through the bungee and this keeps her centered. She can't get on the wheels wells but has some room to move. Short trips only. I add a harness for long trips.
Got a "DUH" thought for Jeep- I can't believe they haven't provided a locking mechanism for the rear seats. (Bungees don't count). Its so easy to fix. Push the rear seat forward and the strap almost touches the back of the center console. All Jeep has to do is mount an eyehook or D ring to the back of the center console. Loop the strap to it and tada- the seat won't move. I am considering driling a hole through my console for this but I hate to put holes in my brand new Jeep.
I tether the leashes to the center of the roll bar (just run it around and choke it through the handle). One of my dogs loves to stand on the wheel well and hang out. With her leash, I have tied it so it is short enough to where she cant actually jump out. It lets her get her out in the air, but not enough to jump...plus shes really good about just hanging out and enjoying the wind. My other dog could care less about hanging out the side of the jeep. I tether her just in case though. She will just sit right behind the center console and look out the windshield.
definitely the Safaristraps. even though i always find my dog sitting in the driver's seat when i come back from inside a store, the straps to a great job protecting him in the cargo area while driving.
I ordered Safari Straps. I also ordered harnesses from buckleuppup.com. But my girls can get a little crazy sometimes. For dogs with more relaxed dispositions, the straps alone should suffice. Although the harnesses are also a safety feature in the event of impact.
This way there is some flex in the cable but I know in the case of an accident they are not going anywhere and the harness will not choke them in the process. We have two pretty big dogs and the damage they would do to themselves or any other passengers would be pretty severe if they went flying through the cabin. I thought about figuring out how to attach the cable to the roll bar instead since the harness has a loop on the back.
Since dogs are not bright enough to anticipate the outcome of such actions as hard braking, crashes, rollovers, etc., I subscribe to what is generally considered the safest alternative. In addition to the beloved pet factor, good hunting dogs have a lot of money and training into them after a couple of years - more than I want flying out the window. To each his own.
The Buckle-Up-Pup Harness System features the unique combination of a chest and rear harness. The "V" tie-down clips the harness to a seat belt or to an anchor point* below the dog's belly. This allows the dog to move freely around this central point, without getting tangled in the straps. The dog can stand, sit, lie down and turn around, but can not jump out or be thrown from the vehicle.
I wanted the double harness because both of my girls have slipped their regular harnesses, the little Houdinis...
My dog is petrified of the Jeep. He grew up mostly riding in my wife's mini cooper, and is not a fan of my TJ. I'm more interested in figuring out how to get him in the jeep, not keep him in!
I've got the CRES and a "homemade" divider. Mine chill in the back on the way to the park. I don't take them on too long a ride anywhere really though. 1-5 miles max. On a road trip I'd look at somethingl like the Buckle-up-pup harness though.
65lb - Bassett Hound
26lb - Healer/Lab mix
My two ride in the back with the seat out - I use there harnesses and theather the on a short lease where they have just enough room to get the heads out the side.
My dog loves to ride and loves to be able to move around in the very back, I'm thinking of going this way. Gotta get it passed the wife though, on paper she thinks it looks terrible. :whistling::flowers:
You have never seen my dog! Long-legged MUT with a short, skinny mid-section. If she were black, she might look like a big spider. We love the ol gal though!
I bought the SmittyBuild Cres. My beagles love it, it's also great to watch them squeeze their heads through the holes. It's just enough to keep them from jumping out but they can still enjoy the fresh air.

I am having the same problem. I just got my first jeep. It is a hemi, only jeep I will ever drive because everyone and their brother drives a jeep, but not a hemi! I was thinking about getting one of those nets to go around the back, but still they can get in between the 2 front seats and jump out. I would need to get one of those wire wall things (kinda like that are in cop cars) to put up behind the seat. That seems like to much junk just to take my puppy dog for a ride. I just do not want him to get out. Then I was thinking about those seatbelt harness things, but I think those are only for shoulder belts not lap belts
I highly reccommend Champion K9 outfitters, i've been using this set up about a year now it is has worked out great! My dog is very well secured, cant jump out, but also can spin/walk around w/o getting tangled. Harness will prevent inadvertant choking should you get in an accident of if the pup manages to jump out for whatever reason.

Def. like your idea! I am not sure if that will work in my jeep though because my cover thing that goes around that bar isn't leather.
