I can see that the hinges are more beefy for sure, but the tire still mounts to a bracket that screws directly to the tailgate...just like the stock one (using the stock screw holes).
Is there more to this? I really want to like it because it looks stock and seems easy to install wit stock rear bumper.
I have it and thought the same thing. I haven't had our heard of any issues though. The one half bolts through the hinge, so you are getting some support there. The main weakness on factory set up is the hinge and space between hinge and carrier. This hinge extends and strengthens the gate.
I might sell mine in a couple weeks and order a bumper with carrier. PM me if you are interested. Only 3k miles on it.
I have it its great like said above it does hold the gate open if you have a older model .very sturdy .i am starting to see some possible rust on the hinge .the paint is not flaking off but you can feel the paint move by the pin .im keeping an eye on it. I would still recommend it to anyone
the hd brackets are steel.the bracket is made from t6 aluminum .it says that right on there web sitehttp://www.teraflex.biz/teraflex-jk-hd-hinged-carrier-and-adjustable-spare-tire-mounting-kit.html#second
I've had mine for over a year now but 2 months I've had my 37's with 20" wheels on it. Absolutely no noise or issues whatsoever. My wheel/tire combo weighs at least 120lbs. I also like that it looks stock. I may be in the minority here but I don't like the look of most tire carriers at the rear. They look "busy" in my eyes with the swing arm crossing the back of the vehicle because the pivot is mounted on the very edge of the bumper. I also like the fact that I can change my rear bumper independent of the carrier. Bumpers are $400-$500 but carriers are $1000 and up. Teraflex really studied the JK body and the rear corners have been reinforced. So adding beefier hinges dramatically increased the strength of the hinge. Let's put it this way, you may be able to run a 35" tire on the stock hinge for a little bit with some clever use of the rubber tire bump stop but you definitely cannot run a 37" on the stock hinge. You can also run Jerry cans and other accessories on it so it can hold more than just your tire.

Teraflex HD spare tire carrier appears to be a relatively easy install that can be accomplished by one person in less than a couple of hours. In fact, along with having a beefy stock look, relative light weight, etc. ease of install sold me on Teraflex. I went by a shop this afternoon to order the T'flex HD and saw an AEV spare tire carrier being fitted on a stock JK rear bumper. Personally, I'm not a fan of the way tire on the AEV carrier is skewed/off center, but the set up didn't look bad, especially for drilling and cutting into a stock bumper. It's definitely a viable solution for the overland jeep crowd. Anyway, after labor ( 2 hrs labor @ $89/hr.) it's almost 1k for the AEV setup.
My plan is to carry my stock rubicon wheels on the Teraflex HD carrier until I wear out my BFG MTs. I saw the following language on Teraflex's product website that reads, **If using stock wheels, a wheel spacer and slight modification is required** anyone toting their 17" stockers and can elaborate on the slight modification language?
I really like mine. It is solid and looks good on the Jeep. Planning on buying another for my wife's JK. The only issue I ran into was with the use of OEM rims and larger tires. With OEM rims one needs to purchase a TF spacer to make the spare fit correctly/securly. It is important that the TF spacer is installed at the same time as carrier because one the need to press in longer studs to overcome the extra thickness of the spacer.
I did not know this going in and found out the hard way. Removing the standard length pressed in carrier studs was well as PITA. Once past all that it has been great. On a side note TF has great CS and is very helpful should you have any issues.
The hinge and carrier are worth the money imo. Every so often I put light penetrating oil around the pins and let soak. Clean off and repeat.
Remove the left rubber stop and grind down some depending on the tire. I put an angle on mine to better fit against the tire. It works. I removed a little material from the studs so they'd go in easier. A file or grinder works. Just don't remove too much.
SO when looking at these on Quadratecs site or Amazon
there are 2 listed , one for around $475 and the other option is $700
Which one do I need if I will be mounting the Duratrac 315/70/17 ?
I have to say teraflex is a great company . I ended up contacting them about my hinges . They gave me a few options. I ended up taking the carrier off grinding down the hinges and repainting them . I sent pics to them and they were impressed that i fixed it my self . They sent me a bunch of free stuff . They also told me that they switched the pins out to SS ones now
Its listed for $935 which seems pretty good for a bumper/tire carrier one hand operation.
If I get the Teraflex for $620 and most rear bumpers are around $400-$500..
that would put me more then buying separately.
Just trying to think this out before I impulse buy ..any words of wisdom??
I love mine. I already upgraded tires/wheels so needed the support ASAP. I plan to upgrade the bumper soon, but am glad I am not tied to any one bumper due to the tire carrier. I also like the accessories they have for the hinge.
yup. because i can run any rear bumper i want. without a tire carrier. it's very stout. i've had a 37" and a 40" tire on it... 37 with the hi-lift, 40 without. and i've wheeled it. a lot. no issues.
Planning on upgrading tires in a couple of months, will be running 275/70r18 Duratracs (E load rating). Would you guys suggest uprgrading the carrier to one of these? If so which one? Would I need the adapter to run that size with stock Sahara wheels? Thanks.
The Teraflex Hinged carrier is well-made, solid and well worth the money.
Instead of buying the adapter, I simply used a 1.5-inch 5x5 wheel spacer: my 35x12.5 spare tire mounts with plenty of room and was even able to retain the factory brake light.
