How much oil does your JK eat?

I've heard some talk of how some tend to really gobble up the oil. Never noticed it much until wheeling it in cold weather up here. In just under 3k from last change, I was down almost 2 quarts which surprised me (especially on the trail). Fortunately, a buddy brought oil with so no problem but still..

Anyone else that wheels their JK find that you burn through more oil at various times?

If you are consuming oil that much bump up to 5w-30 instead of the 5w-20. I use 5w-30 Full Syntehtic Mobil 1 and don't consume nearly that much.

I wheel pretty heavily, tow quite a bit, turn some pretty high rpms on the highway and I burn 1 quart about every 6000 miles. I run 5w-30 and I've never checked oil consumption with using 5w-20.

Thanks all. I'll keep an eye on it. I did not fill it myself at 45k so its possible the dealer was a little light on the fill or he tried filling it with Guinness which might work on a pinch : )

I check my oil pretty much every time I fill up. And drive in lots of conditions (below zero F, heat of the desert, mild coastal temps... on and off road).... haven't used any.

Peaked my curiosity so I checked my 2012 JKU Sahara. With 3,800 miles, and 800 since its first oil change I was surprised to find it about 1/2 quart OVER FILLED. Seriously, how in the world do you do that? Either the auto metered oil filler was set wrong or someone had to open the 7th quart and pour 1/2 quart on top of the correct 6 quarts! I guess I'll have to do it myself to be sure it's done properly. My experience says too much oil can be worse than being a little low. I also checked my 2011 Town & Country (which also has the 3.6L Pentastar) and it was right at the full levels so my dealer is batting 50%. I'll monitor both vehicles to see what's what.

Maybe they left the previous oil filter on and still put in 6 quarts. Only supposed to do the full 6 quarts if doing the filter as well (which should be done every time in my opinion).

Excellent point 4fit. I should have thought of that. I assumed the filter drains since it's up top. Not sure how that works.

I've done four changes so far on my '12 with 15K miles and it doesn't burn any oil at all; using Pennzoil Ultra 5w30. Also, 5 and 1/2 quarts fills it up with a filter change.

Using 10w30 Mobil one. About 3/4 quart every 1500 miles. At 39k on an 08 been this way since I bought it at 26 k about 7 months ago. Doing oil changes every 4500 miles and use a mopar filter every change.

I just bought a 2012 wrangler in
Standard transmission. For some reason the engine sounds like crackling bottles. is that because the oil is low?

Do you not know how to check? I'd take it in if it sounded like that. My '12 is super quiet, so far only 450 miles.

My 09 got Mobil 1 5W20 for the 20K miles I had it and it never used a drop. It makes me wonder how these oil eaters were broken in.

No just another junk 12 ticking mini van engine! So glad I ordered a 11 and got the old proven mini van engine. Sounds like this is the norm for the 12 models. Seven come elevens are getting more valuable every day. The pentajunk must have some kind of design flaw as it floods the forum here with its ticking problem. Ban together lowly pentajunk owners and do a class action law suit against ol walter p crysler, and maybe you will get a hemi swap or something. Ticking in a new jeep with the Jesus motor is totally unacceptable. What a joke the 3.6 has become, maybe they will replace it soon with something besides another torque less mini van engine.

I took it to my dealer for something different and when I drove it home it was fine. Next day coming home from work, it started making sounds. I checked the oil and added a quart. I feel stupid going to the dealer. They act like there doing u a favor when u bring it to them. Jeep service sucks

It was down a quart? That is odd. This thread is mainly about the oil burning pre-2012's, I haven't heard of the 3.6L using oil. How many miles?

18K on my 11 and I don't think it uses any oil. I use 5W30 M one and change every 5K now, but I never open the hood anymore between changes as it never did use oil before earyler. And when I do open the hood I just change the oil and dump in 6 new quarts of 5w30 mobil one and don't bother two check it as 6 quarts filled it just right before in first couple oil changes. So now I never check oil. If it need oil some light of buzzer will come on and I will check it in a day or two. Don't sweat the small stuff.
