How much oil in the Pentastar?

I'm sure this has been discussed......I usually do my own oil changes but being 2500 miles from home I had it done. It only took 5 1/2 qts. The book says 6 qts. 5 1/2 brought it to the full line on the stick......

feedback???

Drive it a few miles and then recheck the level when cold and on level ground. Bet it will read low. My thought is the filter will soak up some, air bubbles will be evacuated, and other nooks and crannies filled with the fresh oil.
Then again your dip stick could be a tad long.

I'd do what Gary said. Also be sure there is nothing wrong with your dipstick, sometimes they're wrong for various reasons. If it were mine I'd drive it with 6 qts of oil in it, then check the dipstick accuracy with another Pentastar Wrangler. Or cut my own full mark with 6 qts of oil after being driven and sitting over night.

You said that you "had it done". Can you be sure that they fully drained the old oil?

About 5.75 puts mine on the full mark. I warm it up let it drain for 30 minutes and thats what it takes. This has been the case on other vehicles I have owned. Seems like putting recommended amount puts it over the full mark!

I have done three changes on mine so far. 6 quarts puts it smack in the middle of the safe range. I do let the oil drain for quite a while before putting the drain plug in.

I've done 4 changes so far. Always put in 6 quarts.... Maybe a little more since the Penzoil 5 quart container is actually a little above 5 quarts.

Also, take the filter off first.

What I meant was that the filter area holds about a 1/2 quart of oil, if you do not remove it first and release the oil. So while draining (or before) remove the filter or you will be 1/2 quart off where that 1/2 quart stays in your engine.

New Pentastar

The filter in the new Pentastar doesn't hold any oil to speak of. It's on top of the engine and a filter cartridge rather than a spin on filter.

I think you are only half correct. The oil filter does hold around 1/3 quart in the cavity till you undo the cap and break the air seal that has formed. Then, the oil flows down by gravity. A Jeep tech told me about this and I am quite sure he is correct, based on the amounts of oil drained when I did not do this before putting the drain plug in, versus when I started to do this.
