Talking How to have a good and bad day while installing a Metal Cloak lift kit

So Saturday, while installing my Metal Cloak 3.5 Dual Rate lift kit, I was under the jeep changing out the stock brake lines with the steel braided lines that came with the kit. In order to take off the stock lines completely, I decided to take the Dremel with a cutting wheel and cut a scoring line across the top of the bracket that holds the line in place so I could more easily bend the metal. While doing so, I was wearing safety glasses as should be everyones practice.

Besides my best efforts to protect my beautiful baby blue eyes, I still managed to get something in my eye. I then did what every good jeeper does while installing an earth shattering, massive 3.5 inch (yes I tell my wife that 3.5 inches IS earth shattering ) lift kit: I Kept Calm and Chived on and finished the install!

Fast Forward to Sunday night/early Monday morning: My left eye is killing me. On A scale of one to ten, the pain level is about an 8.5. Turns out that what I thought was nothing in my eye, was a stalactite of a metal sliver that somehow made it's way around my safety glasses and got lodged into my eye. The real pain was not from the sliver, but from the nice little bit of rust that started to form on my eyeball.

After a trip to the ER and my optometrist, where I got to test my new kit at highway speed, I finally got the metal removed, and a nice new scar on my eyeball no less.

Moral of the story: When you think you might have metal in your eye, go see someone immediately before it has a chance to rust.

Now for pics of the lift before and after!

Glad we are sticking to what's important here. Testing the newly lifted jeep at highway speed.

Glad things are working well on the jeep. Oh, the eye too!

I think Optometrists just like to dilate eyes just so they can go back and laugh at you after you are gone. I swear every time I go see one, they do this to me.

DOH @ the eye. Lift looks good. Just curious, did you take before/after measurements on height? Curious how much you gained with the 3.5" with no heavy armor/bumpers. I put the 2.5" dual rate kit on and gained 2.75 in the rear and about 3.25 in the front with only Ace rails for weight. I had 17/59 springs from the factory.

LOL I was gonna ask you to measure at the center of the wheels to the bottom of the fender and just compare the measurement to my post-lift one but then I noticed you trimmed your fenders too so that's not gonna work

All my left eye has been saying is "Screw you Dude for letting that metal sit in me for 2 days before you went to the doc!"

Before I even think about 37's, I need to get new bumpers, winch, gears, rock sliders, armor, gears, air lockers, axles, onboard air, a divorce, and win the lottery.

Lift looks great! Sorry about your eye.

Here's a good reference on where to measure before and after a lift.

Jeep looks awesome! I also had rust spots grinded out of my eye, 3 different times - also wearing safety glasses. Shot blaster in a steel plant always had shot blowing out the blaster! Even 20 years later, the eye doctor can still see the scars in the eye.

That is the truth. I ended up going back to the ER the following friday, 6 days after the first incident with more metal in the same eye. Different eye protection this time with the same result. The folks in the ER were a bit confused when they saw that I was back for the same thing with-in less than week. I think I am going to do all my work wearing a scuba mask from here on out.

I will go out tomorrow and get some measurements of the lift for everyone's reference. The folks at Metalcloak state that without armor it will come in at about 4.5 instead of 3.5. I don't mind

Ok, After using the reference provided by suicideking, I went out and got some measurements of the front. Now since I installed the lift, I also added OR-FAB front and rear bumpers, rock rails and a LP8500 Superwinch. She is measuring 22 and 1/2 inches from the center of the shock mount bolt to the top mount on the frame adding an additional 4 inches. Hope that helps.
