Hydro Lock HELP

So from what i read, it seems like i hydro locked my jeep.... i think i got all the water out, i took out the spark plugs, replaced them cleaned the area, got the crankshaft to turn over by hand, but the jeep still wont start. Ive done this twice cuz it locked back up while i was trying to start it. I took everything apart again and got the crankshaft break free again... I put everything back together and tried to crank it but after a couple of tried it locked back up .... ANYBODY have any ideas of what is wrong???

Why do you think you hydrolocked it? Did you drive through a deep body of water which would have sucked water into the air intake?

Did you pull the plugs and crank it to blow any water out that may be on top of the piston?

If you did this, and it still seems locked, sounds to me like it's something other than being hydro locked.

Is it auto or manual?

Yes i drove it throught a pretty big puddle (aka a small pond)

Yes i took the plugs out and cranked it to get the water out from the pistons
water did come out and i kept doing it til there was no more water coming out.

It is a manual

So you changed the oil as well, correct?

Did the engine turn over freely with the spark plugs removed?

Also, did you make it through the pond, or did it die in the water? Where did the engine stop?

Not yet the jeep wont even start it has locked back up 3 times now. It cranks freely but wont start and after a while it locks back up so i have to go back it and hand crank the crankshaft

If you truly hydro-locked your engine the engine is toast. Bottom line is water can't be compressed. As a result things bend and break internally. FXnut asked some good questions, we need more info to make the determination if the engine was truly locked up.

What happens when you crank the engine, does it turn over? Do you have a spark? Is there water in the gas? You might get lucky................

First thing I would recommend is DON"T TRY TO CRANK IT AGAIN until you've dumped the oil. It may have 1/2 the pond in the oil pan and you're putting additional pressure on the bottom end.

I would recommend change the oil immediately unless you've check it and it's at the correct level and looks ok and then pull the plugs again, and with fresh oil and plugs out crank it again and listen. If it spins freely you may get very lucky and it may only be water somewhere in the ignition circuit preventing spark or a tripped breaker or something small. If it sounds like you have smurfs with mini sledge hammers in the bottom end of the engine, unfortunately your engine will be toast.

perhaps the starter is not fully working to allow a proper start.. OR perhaps the shut down fuse(not sure what the exact name is, kicked in).. I know they do that will a roll over.. not sure if they do that with water intake...

That's what I am thinking too.. but very strange it will crank and then stop.

Please report back on the condition of the oil and level in the pan.

That's what happens, or worse when an engine was truly hydro-locked.

Shit, i really hate to say it but it sounds like there is something banging around .... the only thing i haven't done is put new oil in it and when i did try and crank it before it kinda shook alot then it would just stop crank ... after a couple times of that then it would crank for a little bit then it would lock up again and i would have to take it back apart and do it again with the same outcome

So you have not drained the oil pan? Did you get all of the water out of the airbox and intake before trying to crank it? I would not touch the starter until you make sure ALL of the water is out of the oil, the intake and the cylinders.

Could you clarify what happens when you say it locks up after cranking? Do you have to pull the plugs to free it up? Is it still spitting water?

Hopefully it hasn't grenaded but it doesn't sound promising.

Not good my friend. Pull the plugs and crank it with the plugs out, squirt a little oil, about a tablespoons worth into each cylinder, put the plugs back in change the oil and filter. Start her up and hope for the best, it will smoke a little, if its banging or knocking shut her down that means something is broken.

The engine "locking up" until he moves crank by hand COULD just be a couple of teeth on the fly wheel broken off upon initial TRY to start after hydo lock. Let us not assume the worst until found.

When it "WILL NOT CRANK"...... do you still hear the starter engage????? or... does teh starter just spin freely like it is not engaging anything????

As suggested, drain the oil........replace with NEW....... or if you have some USED around...... you are not gonna live it in long anyway.

Roll the fly wheel around and see if you are missing any teeth.

oil floats on water, your oil pickup is sending lots of water to the places where oil should be going.

make an insurance claim, USAA bought my buddy a new 3.8 a few years back no questions asked. it doesnt take a lake to hydrolock an engine, hitting a puddle on the highway with the inner fenders removed can possibly send enough water into the intake. get where I am going with this?

an old tractor trick to get water out of an engine was to put diesel into the crankcase and turn it over with plugs removed to flush it all out. the diesel burns off better than water. not sure if this is still a viable solution.

Did the jeep die in the water and become stranded? Also, were you working (depressing) the clutch while in the water? If so, you may have some clutch issues also creating problems too.
