Exclamation I need help

So 3 days ago my 07 JK decided not to turn, at first I though it might be the battery, so I jumped it. only to turn it off and hour later and it did the same thing. so I proceeded to troubleshoot the terminals. everything in the battery seemed o.k so I took the battery to Auto zone. when I picked up the battery
everything checked ok. so I called a mechanic friend of mine I explained the symptoms to him he said it may be the starter so I took the starter off and had it checked and tested and everything was fine, next was the alternator took it off checked it and everything came back good, every time I turn the key there is no response maybe a click from time to time. everything electronically works and turns on but Im starting to think it maybe something else. It DOES how ever turn on when I plug a jump box to it. It even stayed on for a drive around the block but when i slowed down it died again. CAN SOMEONE OUT THERE HELP ME???

Do you just get a single click when you turn the key? Do you have an automatic transmission? If so, then next time it happens shift the shifter the Neutral (or to Neutral and back to Park) and try to start it.

Don't trust the tests at auto zone. I have replaced batteries after the alt tested good, just to find out the alt was bad. To me, it sounds like your alt is not charging your battery. That is where I would start.

So true... They can't test batteries for crap either. You can have one bad segment/cell on a battery and they'll still tell you its good. Easy way to test the alternator is to put a volt meter across the + and - of your battery.

It should read 12v with the engine off and 14 or so with it running if the alternator is doing its job. Note that you *will* still read 12v from terminal to terminal across a bad battery. It can make 12v under no load but still not produce enough amps to crank.

If the alternator is charging, take a chance and replace the battery.

I did have an experience like your buddy was telling you with a bad starter. It had a short or something and the load was so bad that it'd suck a completely charged battery dead overnight with the car just sitting.
