Every time my '13 JKUR gets to operating temp, I smell fresh coolant when I'm near the hood. I park in the garage and when I get out I have to walk by the front... I always smell coolant, sometimes when I'm sitting at a stop light with the window down, I smell coolant... Is this common? Should I be smelling antifreeze?
My '07 does that too. I haven't been able to figure it out. It's been about a year since I added any coolant to the bottle (water pump change) and I don't appear to be losing any.
Have you spilled any. When my radiator cap loosened in my TJ and burped coolant, even though I cleaned it up I could smell it for months. Just a thought.
After my dealer replaced the heater core etc., I smelled coolant very strongly every time I turned off the Jeep in my garage. That was about two months ago and the smell has faded considerably to the point that, if I'm not near the hood, I don't smell it. I chalked it up to the dealer being sloppy when refilling the coolant and spilling it on parts that get hot. After the first time, I freaked out and was paranoid. I was checking the garage floor every night and my parking spot at work every day and the coolant level in the overflow bottle, but never saw a single drop. Just keep an eye on it.
I just had the transmission line changed, do they mess with the coolant lines?
Also, when I go through a carwash, my radiator steams from the center until all the outside moisture evaporates... I've never had a jeep do this and I've owned 8 different models.
The "steam" is normal. It will also happen when there is high humidity. If you're not losing coolant you're fine. I don't get coolant odor with my 10 but others do. I also keep the coolant level in the bottle 2-3" over the min. line cold.
