I will probably never go off road in my Jeep

2010 Wrangler and I love this thing to death. I still get excited every time I drive it. I love the 6 speed manual and how it goes through the snow. I love that I can pop the top in the summer and feel the sun on me. But I will probably never go off road. What am I missing guys????? My Jeep is also stock and will probably stay that way.

off roading is alot of fun. You should take it on some small dirt trails after it rains you woulnt brake anything and the stock can handle it.

When I was actively participating in organizing some 4x4 Tours in SW Colorado, I made it a point to have beginner tours for new Jeep owners. More than a few people signed up just to justify their purchase of a new Jeep! One common denominator of newbie Jeep owners was the awe and amazement of what a stock Jeep could accomplish. At the risk of annoying the aftermarket equipment manufacturers, I would recommend that a new Jeep owner learn how to drive off road with a stock Jeep for at least a year before dumping money into accessories.

I agree. It'll also help you identify any modifications you might need if you indeed choose to modify it. It's better than just buying whatever, slapping on it, and never needing it. Saves a little money.

Nothing wrong with keeping a Jeep stock. It doesn't even have to leave the road. A Jeep is a very versatile vehicle. It'll get you to work, through snow, across a creek, anything you can throw at it. If stock does it no sense in upgrading then.

Just don't be scared to take it away from pavement. Unlike a car, it won't get hurt bouncing around or bombing through a little mud. These things really are pretty tough, and stock covers light and basic wheeling. Advanced fording, deep muddin', crawling etc are where the upgrades come.

If you love the feeling etc of driving it on road, you are missing a whole other feeling/experience when you get it off the pavement

Driving your Jeep on the road is a blast. It's a feeling like no other. Top off, tunes blaring, sun on your face, wind in your hair. Yea! It's good!

Taking it off road can be like an all day adrenalin rush at 3 mph or it can be a wonderful way to get out to those quiet places you might never hike to.

Once you drop the top, pull the doors off and hit the trails, you are completely immersed in nature. The sights, sounds, smells. The big difference is that you can get out further than you would if you were hiking, take your cooler and have a great picnic along the way or even haul your camping gear and spend a few nights. Expedition riding is a wonderful experience.

Going "wheelin' " is a whole different ball game. It's like learning how to ski. You start on the bunny slopes and slowly challenge yourself to do tougher and tougher trails. Before you know it you're out there climbing rocks with your friends and talking about your next mod, fixing what's broken and planning the next trip. You become a part of an odd brotherhood where everyone helps each other, no man is left behind and every rock heap is a new adventure.

What you choose to do in your Jeep is entirely up to you, but I would strongly suggest that you find a friend and go on a couple of expedition drives at least. When you get ready, be sure to be properly equipped though. Even an easy day trip can turn into a hot mess if you're ill prepared.

Check and see if there is a local Jeep club near you. Go on an outing with them, check it out, see if you like it or not. At the very least you'll find some folks with a common interest (Jeeps) and learn where you can go for a nice Sunday drive.

I am new on here but not to the jeep comunity.
A Jeep that does not get to go off road just a little is like a Corvette that never gets to go over 100 MPH.

Instead of buying all the lift kits/big tires/shocks/stabilizers/winch's--

Learn to drive it off road and probably the first MOD, to buy is "sliders', they will allow you to take a few chances without damaging the wax job !!

The rest of your purchase exercise will depend on your Social circle/chances you want to take/Rubicon qualify/income level !!

99% of the Jeep experience. A stock Jeep is the most capable stock 4x4 vehicle on the market. Trust me, take your jeep on a dirt road after it rains and I guarentee you your next post will be

a stock jeep can do alot! My sister plans to get a new jeep and its going on lower terminator first thing. the stock 4lo and gearing with stock tire size is awesome. only upgrades I'm initially recommending would be stronger diff cover

Off road in a jeep is a must. There are plenty of ways to enjoy it other than hardcore crawling or going through mud up to your neck. As adkjoe said, simply driving down a dirt road is a good start. You can even go to a local place that has a mud puddle or dirt lot and splash around alittle. Its only mud, you can wash it off (if you have to). Lots of people who are into going off road don't do the crazy stuff and just stick to trail riding and do it for years. Just because you start off with the basics doesn't mean you have to go for the hard stuff next. The most important thing is to try it before you decide you don't like it...

And Harrington, I actually agree with Denis: drive your stock Jeep someplace fun, and don't worry about not having all the "upgrades." You don't need them. Jeeps are fun. Enjoy them.

I totally agree. When I got my first Jeep, I had a good idea of what they could do because of riding in my friends CJ - at least so I thought... Then I took my shiny YJ on a trip to the Badlands with some friends who had a 4x4 club and proceeded to have my mind blown. I was amazed at the things I could drive over in a stock vehicle. I had just as much fun driving nice easy green trails even, it is just so much more fun taking it offroad than driving it on road.

Nothing wrong with leaving it stock, but buying a Jeep with no intention of taking it off-road it like buying a boat and never putting it in the water. Off-road is the purpose in life for a Wrangler and you are denying its' destiny by only driving on pavement. To quote a bumper sticker I recently saw: "Paved Roads Are A Fine Example of Needless Government Spending."

I may be wrong here,but wait till you get your first accessories catalog.Take a pic of your jeep along side a lake or roadside park.Save that pic to compare with a another pic you take in maybe 2 yrs.I'll betcha that jeep will look very different.Its a disease and you are infected.There is no cure once you own one.Its like jeep leperosy and you now have it all over you!Enjoy.

I too thought that I'd never take my jeep off roading in fear of something breaking and having to shell out the cash to get it fixed. A friend of mine, whom I didn't know extremely well at the time, invited meto his family's farm.

He took me out in his Jeep and we went on the trails. He knew that I hadn't taken my Jeep off-roading, but wanted to show me what it could do. It was easy trails with a few tougher parts, but a stock Jeep had no issues with any of it. After we got back to my Jeep, I couldn't wait to take it out on the soft trails, and the rest is history.

This is my suggestion. Find a buddy that has a jeep that goes off-roading. If you don't have a buddy that goes off-roading in his Jeep, post something in the local forums in here, or join a 4x4 club/jeep club. Don't take your Jeep out, just ride along. It's understandable that you don't want to pop the cherry on your brand new Jeep, since it's new, but you really don't want to miss out on what a Jeep can do.

You don't have to do the aggressive stuff. Just get the experience for your Jeep if not for yourself.

OK I'm sold guys...Looks like I'll be headed right down the road to http://www.erie.gov/parks/chestnut.asp Someone told me they even have dedicated trails for Jeeps and after checking around it appears that there is a club that meets there.

Be prepared (meaning carry the right gear & supplies)
Don't go alone.

Meeting up with a club is a great way to get started and with luck you'll make some new friends.

TAKE PICS, cause if you don't have pics, it didn't happen!

I've spent this morning browsing catalogs looking for accessories I didn't even know I wanted! Now there is a rather lenghty list beginning with an aftermarket head unit & replacement speakers and it just goes on from there.

This is actually good advice.My mods were all done prior to hardcore wheeling and luckily the only regret i have is the lift.I wish i got a 4" lift instead of 2"...my skid plate are bent to hell and seems like it doesnt hold as much gas in the tank because of all the dent i have.

Our club has several "official" runs a year.
One thing we do is to seperate out groups for the hardcore folks, middle weight thrill seekers and a third for the new folks who are out for the first or second time. It's always a kick to see the joy and excitement on a newcomer face when they have gone through their first trail ride.
Kinda takes me back to the first time I went and reminds me of how exhilirating it could be just learning little things.

Unfortunately, it's kind of like a drug. The more you use, the more it takes to get the same thrill.
