Ignition keyed locking gas cap

Called the dealer to get price info on a ignition keyed locking gas cap... I got a price of $78.... PLUS $45 to do the keying by a service tech. Does anyone know if this is a big deal to do? Is it a matter of sticking your key in and turning it to key it? $45 just seems high! Any thoughts?

What is the reason for this? You can't siphon from a Jeep. You afraid someone is gonna put something in your tank?

That's the same as the online price: Locking Gas Cap - 68030940AA | Mopar
Part # 68030940AA

Any local locksmith could probably do this job for you, it might be worth calling one to compare the rates if you want to do better than $45

Find the best price online and start calling dealers. Took some calls but I finally got one to match it. Slipped a mech $15 and he keyed it in 5 min. Saved me some $. Worth a try. GL.

Live in a big city, would like to remove the opportunity for anyone to contaminate my gas. There are some real punks out there.

That is about what I paid. The gas caps from Mopar don't include the tumblers within the mech. My local dealer has a tech with key skills and tools so he was able to do it in about 30 minutes. Bought the Mopar (ignition keyed) hood locks and all you have to do is stick your key in an turn it to set it to your key. I don't know why the caps aren't the same way. Annoying.

Why can't someone siphon fuel from a Jeep?

If it's like mine, there's never much fuel in it!

I bought mine from the dealer. The parts counter manager keyed it for nothing while I waited. With gas over $1.419 per liter or $5.336 per gallon I will keep it locked.

There's a check valve which is supposed to prevent fuel spilling when filling up.

I have one and had one on my TJ - for the same reason as you. Just good peace of mind. I paid a bit less for the locksmith but the dealer took care of it for me and also gave me a non-remote spare key that they made to send to the locksmith. I think I paid around $100 or $110--more for the gas cap, less for the locksmith.

Most modern vehicles have an anti siphon mechanism built in. Not going to stop sugar in the gas tank.
Also they just punch hole in the gas tank, easier and quicker.

The skid plate doesn't help to protect it?
