Ignition problem???

To start, I have a 2008 JK with an automatic transmision. I drove to work last night in a michigan snow storm in 4X4, moved my Jeep in the middle of the night so the snowplow could clear the parking lot, and then drove home in 4X4.

When I reached my local grocery store to purchase my favorite adult beverage, my key wouldn't come out of the ignition. I took it out of 4X4, shifted into different gears, turned the Jeep on and off several times, and I still couldn't remove the key.

I drove to the nearest Jeep dealership and the service manager also couldn't remove my key from the ignition. He wrote up a work order and I went to the waiting room. About 45 minutes later the service manager comes in and says "I have good news, your key came out." I asked what happened and he says "I don't know, my mechanic drove your Jeep, and then shut it off and the key came out. Just keep an eye on it and let us know if happens again."

Anyone have this problem before???

If it sticks again, turn key to "ON" and cycle shift lever thru the selections-push to "PARK" and jiggle (left/right) steering wheel, while pulling on key in it's (REMOVE) position !!

Sometimes if the steering wheel is "LOCKED" because of parking angle/curb/hill-whatever-you have to push the steering wheel AGAINST its blocked direction-to release key or take tranny outta "PARK"--

Good luck

Unfortunately Jimbo, it wasn't the steering wheel lock. I've overcome that problem before, and neither I or the service manager could remove the key.

Rats, could be something in the brake pedal sw./"park" position sw/, or some stupid harness connector contact-

If you have another key--always carry that with you-see if you can lock the doors with the key still in the ign, but "off"

I don't know if this will help, but I know my parents VW had the same problem and the dealer ended up swapping the ignition out.

I had this problem once.

I had the parking brake on, trans in neutral, and forgot to slip it in park shut my jeep off, and proceeded to swear, and turn the engine on and off about 5 times. Swore some more. Punched the dash, then noticed the shifter in neutral. I then calmly looked around to make sure nobody saw this, quietly shifted into park, pulled out my key...and bought a bottle of Prozac

It's pretty obvious. Your Jeep wasn't done being driven yet!

Once again with the key...I drove to work, pulled in the parking lot, parked the Jeep and the key was stuck! I then started it up and pulled around to the secured parking area so I could leave it open with the key in the ignition. The key came right out!

I'm at a loss.

Have you tried using your spare key?

daggo66 - I haven't tried the spare yet, but I think I'm gonna have to carry it on me if this keeps happening.

GroundHawg - That's funny stuff.

FlyinJeeps - They just may have to replace the ignition. Hope it's covered on the extended warranty.
