Hello today I was coasting throughout town and came across a 2008 Jeep Wrangler X Series that was for sale for 16,500.
The milage is 90,000 and would rate the condition of the jeep as average.
The wrangler is bare stock and seems like it needs a replacement of a soft top and is a 1 owner vehicle.
Im i getting ripped off for the sale price of 16,500 or should I try to talk this dealership down.
The warranty that comes with the vehicle is a 36,000 or 3 year warranty for all components and engine.
Attached is a picture aswell
Are they giving you a 3/36 warranty from your date of purchase? Or did you see something that said the 2008 came with that warranty?
If they are giving you an additional 3/36 from your date of purchase, I'd ask for a copy of the contract and read EVERY line and make sure what it covers and what it doesn't. I had a warranty on my Mustang back in the day and it didn't cover squat. You should also investigate the company providing the warranty and see what kind of reputation they have. I'd also look into where you can take your jeep for service using that particular warranty. Make sure you're not limited to taking it back to THAT specific dealership only and that you won't lose your coverage on vacations or if you wind up having to move during the warranty period.
If you're not a decent shade tree mechanic I'd also recommend you taking it to a qualified mechanic and asking them for their opinion. Most dealerships will allow a serious buyer to do that.
We really need more information. You say "bare stock", yet I see the Sahara style running boards and cast wheels vice the steelies you normally see on the "X" models here. Does it have A/C, automatic transmission, upgraded stereo (i.e. 430/Nav)? All of those things factor into pricing. Also, why do feel that the top needs to be replaced? Are there issues with the zippers not working, tears, or other obvious damage? Sometimes the side windows are not inserted into the channels properly and they seem to be coming out. It is a simple fix.
As far as a third party warranty, well, I haven't seen one I'd pay for. See how much they'd drop the price without it. The last one I saw for a used car required for you to have their shop do ALL required maintenance - even oil changes!
can you not find a base 2014 on a lot somewhere for around 20? probably under 20 now.. seems like a lot of money for a base that is 7yrs old with that kind of mileage..

Of course you should always try to talk the price down.
Like others have said, see what a new one cost.
I started out looking at used since it was going to be an extra vehicle, ended up buying new for what they were asking for used.
Dealers typically give bottom dollar of KBB for trade in so they can turn around and list it for top dollar of KBB. That being said, there's plenty of haggle room built in.
Too high, also, get low as mileage as you can. Unless you're getting some kind of warranty then buying from a dealer means nothing but about 4k money down the drain, use craigslist instead or AutoTrader for direct individual searches only.
Depending on your location, that may be the best deal you can expect. That would be about average here in North/Central Texas.
One note - if that vehicle did not come with a hard top from the factory, the wiring harness for the wiper and defroster will not be there, as the hose for the windshield washer will not be there either (nor will you have controls for them). If the Wrangler already has the harness and controls in place, then they could have been holding out on you as far as the hard top goes. Of course, if the are a Jeep dealer, they can hook all of that up for you too - and that may be included in their price. Ask them about it!
Depending on your area that may be the best deal you can expect!?! That's crazy talk. If it means saving a couple thousand dollars, it's worth traveling to get the deal.
I have cash swell and they were telling me that regardless if I finance or go through paying cash they still get paid and it will not change any thing.
Once again, look at a brand new base model. Better engine by far and financing will be better. A few grand won't affect the payment much. And the pros to a brand new is better. The engine alone is worth getting a new one. So far everyone's agreed on either getting a steal of a deal or brand new. Personally I wouldn't touch a 3.8 turd.
If you get new you're seriously looking at roughly $40 tops more on monthly payment? And new vehicles have better intrest rates....
Would be a silly decision to buy a Jeep with 90k miles for that kind of money and a couple more grand and you could have new. At 90k miles that thing is over half worn out and should be half price.$10-11k tops. Just go buy a new one and know you got a great deal and a solid Jeep that someone didnt beat to death.
I think you can get a better deal, even if you are stuck on buying used. Yes youre getting a hard top now but make sure you get the rear window wiper and washer fluid lines installed too. The hard top costs max 2500, so thats 14,000 for a jeep thats 7 years old and 90000 miles....I would say thats not the best deal. Look around more and see what pops up. When I first started looking at jeeps, I looked at used vehicles too and came to realize for a few grand more you can get a brand new one. With new youll get the better 3.6 engine and ungraded interior with no miles and the warranty.
Look at truecar and see what kind of quote you can get for a new one.
I just paid 26 for a 13 JKU sport (13,000 miles) with 3.73's, lsd, tow package, power windows, power locks, 430 head unit, 3 piece hard top, etc. and it's still under factory warranty. When i was looking, i found multiple 13 and 14 2 doors, similarly equipped as my jku, for 19 to 21. That price is very high for a 2 door base model with 90k on the clock. I hope you can go return it and get your money back.
