Not an other Prius thread.
Stay out of the throttle.
Don't do 70 plus on the freeway.
Run syn oil.
Drive it like you want to get good mileage.
Keep your tires properly inflated.
My 07 JKU will get 15-17 ave but on an extended freeway trip I will see 20-21. It's a brick on wheels. You really can't expect economy. You may of bought the wrong car if MPG was a concern.

Who wants to drive a beater car after spending $35K on a new Jeep?... and just for the gas mileage?

As was stated, this doesn't make sense financially.

It makes more sense to buy a beater, save the $35K and rent a newer Jeep or Cadillac when you feel like driving one on the weekend. Your primarly auto insurance and AMEX card will cover the insurance and you'll never need to maintain, fix or pay licence fees on a rental - just turn it back.

The newer vehicles are expendable.. the only thing worth perserving are the memories of what you did in your Jeep.

As was stated, it makes perfect sense financially. Unless you can prove my math faulty then I have an extra $2400 in my pocket every year to spend on the Jeep. Which doesn't just sit in the garage. The car is strictly a commuter. Back and forth to work. Trust me i'm not missing any fun memories mindlessly driving 55mph on a straight paved road. The fun memories are on the weekends out on the trail. Or at the lake. Or at the whatever it is I go to do to have fun...not work.

I have a hard time believing one can buy a reliable beater for $2500 and forgo *any* repair or maintenance; your beater is the exception and at zero depreciation and only $108/yr insurance and free registration.

Like I said it works in you unique case, but I'm clearly seeing it not work for a friend and demonstrated it barely works for her even removing major repairs and down time (beaters break down often) in the rough comparison I provided.

If the idea is to compare commuter vehicles there is no argument there are better choices and I fully agree with you on the math. But, some people like myself need 4x4 every day for work and others can't fit their daily gear into a 40mpg compact; that's why they picked a Jeep or other SUV. Some have no room to add a 2nd vehicle.

How does a vehicle depreciate when Not driven? A jeep with 100k is worth more than a similar jeep with 200k right? You guys can keep saying its not worth it but I save enough every month to pay for my jeep and insurance. Been in the Honda for 9 years and it HAS saved me $$. GL.

4,375 - 1,893 = $2,482 saved in the first year of ownership. Hell it will have already paid for itself in less than a year. In my situation it works. You just have to do some research ahead of time. The next year after that looks like i'll have an extra $2,482 to spend on Jeep mods...
Thing is, you have to calculate any and all maintenance done and any other costs on the second car for the simple reason that it is, in its entirety, a vehicle you wouldn't otherwise have except to save money on gas.

How many miles on the odometer? What did you overhaul for $1K?

I can't imagine what your interior looks like after 20+ years. Plastics, carpet, seat cushions, upholstery? Maybe you found one owned by a little old lady..

How well does the other stuff work?

The loss is probably higher if you trade it ... I say about $6K based on experience.

If its a limited run special edition there's some relief... assuming you didn't pay over invoice.

But you need to find the right buyer.

Ok. To be honest I forgot I was on the Jk side of the forum. I have a yj that I bought used. If you have a new vehicle depreciation is deff a consideration. But my situation is different in that aspect.

199100 miles
For 1k I bought a used motor and rebuilt it(myself). New axles new seals where needed and small things brakes ect.
Interior is not wonderful but not bad for 24 years. No cracked or painted plastic parts. The seats I replaced with seats from a 97(I think) civic. Carpet has a 2 tears.
Everything works as it should other than ac,which I removed when I was 19 and didn't realize how foolish that was. And the fan is on a manual switch.
The car is not much of a looker but for a go-kart on the street and 40 mpg I don't complain.

I also replaced a F150 with a V8. I was getting 14 city and 17 highway. With the Jeep and the same driving conditions I am getting 19/23. If I hypermile it I can get 21.5 in the city and over 24 on the highway. I have a 6 speed manual and shift between 1500-2000 RPMs.

The Pentastar is an advanced engine and with mild hypermiling tricks and a 6 speed manual you can do great things with it.

The better mpg actually helped me to purchase the JKU as it offset the cost of my used F150. Cost of new Jeep is equal to my monthly cost of $12000 loan on used F150 w/ gas costs.

600 miles on the jeep already and still no improvement in mpg 14/15. Don't even want to know what I'm going get once I lift it 2.5 inches and run 35's..

That's what the display on the dash says in mine, but I find that hard to believe with my light foot, even with my 4 short trips (heat up/cool down cycles) per day. I saved every gas receipt since day 1, so I will eventually check how many miles I've driven vs. gallons of gas purchased.

I don't even keep track of my mileage and my wife's Denali doesn't get over 13mpg unless we get out of town lol. Mpg has never mattered to us. It's all about enjoying what we drive.

Honda got sued... some women (attorney) took them to small claims court and won. Maximum award... but then was overturned by another judge on appeal. Sounds like our judges are in full swing as in switch hitters. We vote for something we don't want and the judges come out of their closets and overturn our vote.

I was hoping this was going to stick in favor of the plantiff. Imagine the number of small claims against the automotive world for false advertising...

Why does that hybrid only advertise 50mpg? The fact that GM used to make a 53mpg non hybrid in 89 says alot about that

Just leased my wife a Nissan Leaf -all electric. $3450 down and $80 a month for 2 years. I drive it once a week to work so my 15.8 mpg doesnt seem so bad in my old 98 TJ. HA!

So technically $223/month ($3450/24 + $80) plus the costs to charge it? Any idea how much those charges are? Be interesting to know.

mileage 2013 Sport

I'm getting 16.5mpg on stock suspension with new wheels and 285/70/r17 Nitto Terra Grappler. First tank of fuel from the dealership i did get 18.5mpg. But not since the new wheels and tires and a 110 lbs of side armor. No new front bumper yet but that will be next year. Wind out here in the Texas Panhandle is kind of tuff on fuel mileage anyway. Oh well it is what it is....

My last tank was my first one at 16 with the exact same driving I have been doing. Maybe its breaking in finally. I switched to synthetic today, but I know that won't have much of an affect on mpg. I didn't buy the Jeep for mileage. I bought because it is a fun vehicle that I can mod into whatever I want.
