Improve gas mileage

Just purchased my first jeep wrangler. Always wanted one. I love my JK but I'm concern about my mpg. Currently getting about 14 - 15. My last car was a huge ford f150 pick up with a v8 engine and I was getting the same mpg. Is it going to improve once I break it in?

I thought the same thing when I first got mine, but people don't by jeeps for the mpg. I was kinda bummed at first but then after going mudding and rolling around I realized the real reason I bought my jeep. You can get a cold air intake if you really wanna get better gas mileage I also heard keeping under 2000 rpm helps a lot with gas mileage but its up to you my man. Just enjoy the jeep and I promise you will forget about gas.

It will get better the more miles you get into the break in period. Mine was at 15-16 stock... Now I have a 3" lift and 35s and I get right around 17... I have just under 4k miles.

what year is your JK? My 2012 JKUR gets around 18.5 on stock suspension/tires on the highway (with top/doors on), and this is with a winch, steel front bumper/disco skid and steel fenders (so I added a bit of weight....)

With the top/doors off I'm getting about 15-16 on the highway (and 16-17 off-highway)

Im getting 12-13 mpg for 2.5" lift with 35". The car is still under 500 miles. Im little bit worried if it doesnt improve after break in. I would be happy if i could get 15-16 mpg. Not sure how some folks are getting 17-18 with 3" lift and 35" tires. Its a mystery for me

Gear size, tire size, and RPM's will be key, next would be weight.

3.73 gears on 32" tires at 2,000 RPMs (55MPH) should show good MPG's, and going over 60 MPH and you take a hit with the wind force.

Having 3.21 gears on 35" tires at 2,500 rpms will give poor MPG's.

Add to that A/C and radio will take up some power/mpgs.

Good MPG tips;

Have tire pressure checked often and look at the use of nitrogen.
Don't run your A/C.
Don't run your radio.
Don't take off fast.
Don't go over 55MPH.
Don't carry gear you don't need/use.
Have your tire size and gear ratio matched for best MPG.
Go the longer flat route over a shorter rout with hills.
Use Synth fluids in transfer/transmission/gear housing/engine.

Or just do what you want and have fun with your Jeep and don't sweat the MPG if only down a few from factory.

I honestly think that washing the bugs off the front grill would make a bigger difference than not running the radio.

Biggest way to improve mpg is your right foot... But not matter it is hard to make these vehicles sip fuel (especially when gas is +$4.00 a gallon).

I have a 2012 JKU that is completely stock. I travel for work and have a P.O.S. car for that but it was in the shop last week and had to take the Jeep. Put about 400 miles on that week, probably 90% highway, of that 50% was with cruise set at 73mph, the other I got stuck on a 2 lane behind traffic doing 40-45 the whole time. It was frustrating till I filled up and noticed that the Lie-O-Meter claimed I got 22.7 mpg, when I hand calculated it, it was 21.1 mpg. Still impressive for a box on wheels, as far as wind resistance is concerned.

I have a stock 2013 2d Oscar Mike auto 3.21 gears.....have been getting right around 20/21 mpg on my 34 miles a day round trip for work...3/4 of the trip is 45 to 55mph....the rest is 35mph city driving but I go to work a 3am so deal with almost no traffic and head home around 1pm so even then I get no rush hour traffic.....I averaged around 18/19 with my stock 09 auto JK X 3.73 doing the same trip.....of course mileage was worse in winter with the cold and snow....

It's advised that playing Justin bieber will cause your engine to try and run away from your speakers thus raising rpms and lowering mpg

I was getting high 14's and low 15's after I got my Jeep. After 3000 miles, my last tank was almost 17, and that was with more aggressive driving, and a journey with 7% grades. Give it time and the mpg should increase a little.

Since it's brand new, I'll tell you my experience... When I bought mine, the first 1k miles, the mileage was 'eh', getting around 14~15 mpg. I'm approaching 3k and I'm getting between 16.5 ~ 18.6mpg, based on my last three fill-ups.

I think the bad MPG, initially, is just do the break-in period.

Just another MPG thread...any Prius owners out there want to chime in. Seriously..13-14 mpg vs 16-18 mpg. Is it really that much of a difference? Wrong vehicle to be worrying so much about gas mileage.

My 95 yj 4cyl got 14 mpg. My 02 tj 6cyl got 15. My jk gets 14-15 on 35s.

Moral of the story is jeeps suck for mpg. Driving style will also play a part.

The last "old Honda" I looked at buying (for my son in college) was 8 years old, had 285,000 miles on the clock, had been repaired from one wreck and been in another that still showed in the form of minor body damage. I called the afternoon it listed to make an appointment to view it since it was only $3800. The guy said it had sold. Near a big city, where people buy airport cars, snow day cars or beater commuter cars, that same old Honda would have sold for nearly $6K. Hell for that kind of money, buy a second beater Jeep!!! Woo hoo!

I think the whole "beater import for good MPG" is both a myth and a ruse started by used car salesmen who like to hope we forget that we have to drive that beater import another 10 years to recoup the cost difference between our primary vehicles MPG and the cost of buying a beater, maintaining it and insuring it.

MPG discussions ain't bad really. It's just that people need to probably do the "cost to own math" before they buy -- and bet on 16-17 combined as a baseline.

Since you asked, sure. In my Prius (my daily driver), I'm getting around 47-49 in the city, and about 44-45 on the highway. I like driving my Prius so it can give you guys more gas for your Jeeps.

I have a 3" lift with 35's and bought mine on 6/14/13. I know have 600 miles on it. Daily driver to and from work (36 miles one way and a big mountain to cross) I went from 17 to 19.5 Not quite sure how, just happy it has.

I know that the cost offsets the advantages for most part but I started running 100% gas with no ethanol and gained almost 2 mpg. I wonder sometimes what gas is standard for publishing gas mileage.

I recently bought a 2002 Saturn SC1 for commuting. $2000 with 170k miles and I get 40 MPG so far on my first tank of gas.

this is wierd to me , i have a 13 jkur , lifted with 315's ( duratracs) , cai , exhaust ,steel bumpers , skids and a ton of etc , im getting 17.5 and i do 70-80 on the highway , and beat on it at lights and around town , a/c on and off
11,000 miles on it now
guess im " Winning " and enjoying the hell out of it

Right let's say the average distance driver did that and got "40 MPG" from a beater and 17 from a Jeep.

So 2K worth of gas difference means 4-5 year to pay back
Tires oil changes during 4 years, another year's worth of gas difference

Insurance for those 4 years another years worth of gas difference,, two if you are young or can't get premium discounts on car insurance (imports have higher rates, they are stolen more often, especially honda)

You can play with the math all day, but you only beat the difference if you rack up thousands more miles than the "average" driver, get great MPG and service from your used car, and get lower than average MPG from your Jeep.

Like I said, do that math. If it works for you, it's a good deal. But on average it's a total wash.

BTW, what model Saturn is that? I've got two college kids driving $5K domestics (Ford, Buick) with V6s getting 20 mpg. I'd love to swap one out for a 40 MPG Saturn. Saturn Mileage Reports | Fuelly
