How should I go about getting more horsepower on my 08 unlimited rubicon 6-speed manual (lifted/35s)? I've heard the diablosport trinity tuner will increase hp by about 80? Any ideas? I wouldn't mind increasing fuel economy too, but getting more horsepower is my main concern.
Really, there is no real hp gains with the 3.8 without completely rebuilding it. Several manufacturers have published what they did to get some gains but the best any dyno has shown was 10 hp and they added headers, Cat back, CAI, and used a tuner. ANd even then that hp gain was at 4600 rpms. At normal rpm range it was more like 2-3hp gains. And Superchips claims they gave most of that according to their dyno.
Now Superchips does give other advantages on a 3.8 which includes a small hp gain, better fuel mileage about 1mpg, and better throttle response. In advanced mode you can even change shift points and other setting for a little better performance but you have to know what your doing to use advanced features.
Saying that, your best bang for the money is RE_GEARING. You don't get more engine hp but what you do get provides you more hp by putting your engine in a better hp to rpm range. Since you will be running at higher rpms to a given speed, you will see better hp because of the steep hp to rpm's on the 3.8.
I'd say that's too much for a manual. I don't have my chart handy, but anticipating they're really 34" tires, my recollection is 5.13s would have you at right about 3k at highway speed--too much IMO.
It all depends on why you want to re-gear. I have 4.88's with an Auto myself. It is my dd and I like to hit the trail when I can. I found that 4.88 aren't a great highway gear set especially since I have 33's. One of the reasons I am getting 35's. I think 4.88 and 35's are a good match for a all around gearing. Now if it is a strictly road vehicle then 4.88 may still be a little much but is still a good choice. For dd and trails, it is a great match with 35's. But if it is for towing and trails, then 5.13's may work better when running 35's. But really 5.13's to me are more for 37's.
