I have one, it's really cool having the torque app to see the engine stats. They are also working with a company to bring a built in tuner to market, don't really know who but I'm thinking superchips. I love having the App Store to download any app you want, it's nice on long trips. The downside is that it doesn't quite fit like a glove like they say, it fits very good but the bottom pushes out on the trim at least in my experience. Doesn't look too bad but it's noticeable. And the price is outrageous, I have heard of people buying head units online that are almost exactly the same for about half the price. Not sure if those cheaper one have the same internals but look the same on the outside

I have one in my 2015 JKURHR. For me, it did fit like a glove. Very OEM look/feel to it.

I love being able to install apps onto it. I've put on "Backcountry Navigator" and bought some really nice maps for that. I also geocache, so I put on "c:geo" as well. Torque is great, it's very cool being able to see live stats like that.

It takes about 10 seconds to boot. That being said, they have circuitry to enable viewing a backup camera immediately upon start. That video feed can be displayed while the unit is booting in parallel.

I love the unit.

My only gripe is that I store music on a SD other than the boot media. The boot media is small and is also used to license their NAV app. Realistically, not a great place to store mp3s. Android itself (not InsaneAudio's fault) doesn't attach other SD/USB immediately so I have to wait just a bit longer (another 15 seconds) before I can play MP3s. The radio works right at boot though.

looks cool, but isn't android up to like v5.x now? why does it only run v4.2? can it be upgraded?
and why only a 645GB MicroSD? why not 128 or more?

#6 ·
It can be upgraded. The maker gives GREAT support btw. Very responsive and helpful.

WRT >64GB, I believe it does support it. I think the 64GB number just represented what InsaneAudio tested. I believe other users put in larger cards and they worked.

It's pretty good. You can load any Android nav app you wish.

#13 ·
The connected nav providers have a lot of accuracy, but I prefer Copilot from ALK. It's loaded to the device so you don't need a data connection to navigate. You would be surprised at how much of the country doesn't have cell data service.

Does it have wifi so it can be hot spotted to a phone or to home wifi when in the driveway?

#14 ·
Yes, it has wifi. It doesn't have a whole lot of storage built in so you would most likely have to download maps to an sd card. The nav software that comes on it has the maps downloaded so no need for data connection unless you prefer different nav app

i am interested in this HU. i read all the q and a on their site. i see that the HU is compatible with the new 9 speaker Alpine from one of the q and a's. however, it doesnt go to the detail to state that the fade still works. with some of the other aftermarket HU's, the sub in the 9 speaker Alpine "works" but you lose the fade. can anyone verify that the fade works? also, did anyone have and retain the console usb port after installing this HU? if yes, what is needed? just a usb to mini usb adapter?

#16 ·
so, just randomly looking around...
not that I am planning to buy a new HU ore anything... my 430 is fine... really... despite the feeling that it is like a 10+ year old design...
but really it is fine...

anyway, seems Rockridge4wd is having a sale on them at the moment... 10% off... not a bad deal I think?

I blame GordonSmith & 15JKUR for viciously attempting to part my money from me...

anyway, is there any good reason not to go with Rockridge on this?

#19 ·
:lmao:

I bought mine when I found it for 10% off. If you want the unit, sounds like a great time to pull the trigger. Rockridge is a good dealer.

I bought one, and will give you my opinion, from my experience.

Pros
Fit well, and install was simple
Has a lot of cool features, but take a little time to learn

Cons
No possible way to hook up satellite radio. If you call they tell you to stream it over your phone. If I am on a trail, I am probably not going to be in cell range, or want to pay the data charges.
Sound with stock speakers was beyond awful, really, I found it horrible. I have tinnitus really bad, and between the sound of the stereo and my ears, everything was practically unintelligible.
Mine went into to default or failure mode two weeks after purchase.
Super expensive for a kind of cheesy simple form factor.

So, after two weeks, I pulled it out, ordered a avic 6000nex along with all new speakers, and a satellite interface, and was money ahead.

In my opinion, there are much better options out there.

Sucks that you had a bad experience. Luckily, I've had the opposite.

There is actually a way to do satellite radio with it, but it's not the best approach. They are looking into a better approach (they are in talks w/ Sirius) currently.

If you want satellite, you can get a different satellite radio (some portable unit, stick it in the glove box or something). Connect the audio out of that device to the Insane Audio HU through aux in. You wouldn't be able to control it (other than volume) from the HU so it's not ideal.

Hopefully they come to terms with Sirius and provide a nice accessory package.

So, got my tracking number already, now just in sit and wait somewhat patiently mode...
While sitting and waiting, I realized I am not completely up to date on the whole car pc/android thing...
Is there a list of the "must have" apps somewhere?

#23 ·
It's access is through the Bluetooth dongle that plugs into your OBDII port. I know it can read, I don't know if it has the ability to write. That would be a great question to post on the insanejeepaudio.com forums.

#24 ·
really? I would think the CAN bus would be part of the harness plugged into the back of the unit, so it could read the steering wheel controls/etc...
the stock 430 gets it over the rear harness I believe...

I tried posting over on their forums... that place is dead, no traffic at all...

#25 ·
The Insane Audio head unit uses the Torque app to display OBDII info about the vehicle. The Torque app get its info via bluetooth from an OBDII dongle/connector.

The 130, 430 and 730 series radios do receive CANBUS info via their harness. It's how they set the security code to the vehicle's VIN. It's also how you can take a 430 or 730 from a different FCA/Chrysler vehicle, plug it into a JK and it will display Jeep on the 2nd power up.

The new Alpine X009-WRA for JK can display vehicle info such as TPMS, door ajar, etc. It reads this info via CANBUS.

#26 ·
So, according to the insane guys, you could (theoretically) write to the CAN bus....
So, now we just need to find someone who can randomly poop out a bunch of 1's & 0's (aka a Software Dude) and see how much trouble we can cause...

#27 ·
well, is was nice(ish) out today, got my JK1001 installed.. only had 1 left over screw when I was done, so overall not bad...

sound seems fine... fit is perfect...
no issues currently...

#28 ·
playing with poweramp, seems nice overall, but how do you make the steering wheel controls change songs?

#32 ·
poweramp has officially pissed my off...

Poweramp is great when it works, but I don't tether my phone all that often, and Poweramp seems to all of a sudden want to verify the license all the time now... then pops up some stupid message saying it cant contact the play store or some crap... of course it cant contact the play store, there no [bleeping] internet... I am not going to tether my phone and waste my data so some stupid app can phone home...
I just wish Poweramp would stop worrying so [bleeping] much about contacting [bleeping] servers and just play my [bleeping] music...
it used to work just fine, but I guess it updated recently or some such?

anyway, anyone know of a decent music player that is happy with play local files, with local artwork that has no need to be contacting some [bleeping] server all the time?

I've had the JK1001 for +7 months and love it - worth every penny. We took a 1 month 6,000 mile trip from Houston to Glacier this summer. The Navengine made the trip a breeze even in some of the most remote places in Montana. And to heck with the satellite radio - load all of your favorite music on your phone, Bluetooth connect it and hit shuffle. You'll never know the difference. Since you can load any app from GooglePlay, you can get anything you want. With the cell phone wifi tethering, I do my company email from the unit. I also have the GoPro app loaded so I can connect to my Hero and run the camera through the JK1001.

I have the Alpine system with this headunit. I'm not an audiophile but to my untrained ear it sounds very good, better than the stock base radio. It has a 9 band EQ. You can connect your phone to it to makes calls, it has a built in mic on the radio and also comes with an external mic if you want to use it for better sound quality.
