Interesting JKU

This is the JKU of someone who was at my office yesterday. He is a storm chaser for NOAA.

Wow, that thing is rigged out. Reminds me of the Army's RC-12 Huron.

I wonder if he practices his field goal kicks though the back there.

Hmmmm.. I don't think I'd want to chase any storms in a JKUR.. Lets see.. High center of gravity.. check.. relatively slow... check.. "tear away" doors/top... check..

As much as I love Jeep and my JK, I think I'd pass on using one for storm chasing! Give me something low and fast please..

If you are close enough to a tornado that you are concerned about the aerodynamics and center of gravity, then you are doing it wrong.

I think that guy is some weird guy who believes in Aliens and that the governemet secretly sparys chemicals on its people from the air....

I mean come on he has a pro choice sticker on his spare tire carrier...LOL

from the NOAA website:
Quote:

“Storm Chasers”

In case you were wondering: There is no “Storm Chaser” job description at NSSL. The only time people chase storms for NSSL is when a special project is being run to collect data in the field. These projects are somewhat rare. When a project is running, some of the scientists are asked to donate part of their time to help with data collection during storm intercept operations. Sometimes, employees even donate their own personal time (i.e., unpaid time) to help out.

When we do go to the field to collect data, our “storm chasers” are NSSL employees, University of Oklahoma students, or collaborating scientists from other laboratories or Universities. Consequently, if you had an interest in this type of work, it is important that you obtain a degree in Meteorology or related field (Physics - lightning research, Electrical Engineering - radar design and fabrication, etc.) and have some ties to the type of research we are conducting at the time of the field project. Note that nearly all of our Meteorologists at the lab have Masters degrees or PhDs.

Government regulations make it impossible to accept offers from the public to do volunteer field work for any tornado intercept programs. Legal liability issues prevent NSSL from accepting volunteers.

It just goes to show that you don't need really need a Rubi no matter how rough the going gets.

But it's still nice to have one.

Door sticker is "Skywarn", that's storm spotting not chasing. There is a difference. They don't try and get close they just are looking for storms and providing location and movement information to NOAA.

The Skywarn statement is not necessarily correct. My buddy that works for a news station has those on his, and he films storms as well as chases. Pretty much all those stickers are good for is being able to drive as fast as you want by cops on storm warned days...of course with garth brooks blasting. it is quite a rush

Did he go to tre training sessions. Anybody can buy the stickers, those that take spotting seriously know to stay away.

A few more antennas would be better. There's probably no monthly cable bill.

Given the wheels and the color of the vehicle and hardtop....it is either a 2011 or 2012.

That is....important....

Wranglers are already slow....but if that bad boy is rocking the 3.8....it may chase storms....but it will never catch up with one. Especially if there is a lot of wind.

And as already mentioned, I can't think of a worse vehicle to be in during a tornado or hail storm.

Still...interesting indeed.

yeah these vehicles are about 98% plastic and 2% engine...although getting hailed on with a soft top makes a cool sound.
