Intermittent noise - 2010 Sahara 6 speed

Hello all,

I am new to this forum, and am on my 2nd Wrangler.

I have a new 2010 (just hit 1000 mi) and have an intermittent (bad sounding) noise that seems to occur only when the car is cold or not totally warmed up. Intermittent, of course. Once totally hot, noise will not occur.

I hope this is not too wordy, but I don't know how else to describe it.
When I start in 1st gear and let my foot off the gas (engine braking), I hear a loud creaking/crunching/scraping noise that seems to coincide with the engine being torqued in the oposite direction from that of driving forward (flexing on the motor mounts).

My wife heard it today and she thinks it came from the exhaust.
I don't see anything even close to the exhaust, so I don't think it is hitting anything. Some days it is louder than others. And the only time I can predictably reproduce it is after it sits overnight. Then it goes away.

I am afraid to take it to the dealer (what a mistake buying it from THEM - but that's another story).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
By the way - great forum!

One thing I can suggest is to use a computer laptop to document the noise. If you look around at places like bust buy or radio shack, you should be able to find a small microphone. Bring it out of the bottom of the door and clip it under the jeep where you think the noise is coming from. Keep the microphone from having direct contact with the place it is secured to: let it hang as apposed to clipping it tight to a surface or edge. If you put it in contact with a surface, it will pick up noise from the surface. As a troubleshooting tool, it can be used to locate the source of the noise by moving it around under the jeep until it records the noise the loudest. Hope this helps.
