I have the Daystar phone holder for the dash and it works ok but phone is as big as it will hold. I may be looking for another mount to connect to the ball mount in the Daystar unit. My daughter has one that is like an X and hold ms very good. Hers connect to windshield.
I'm not going to promote any companies or the one I work but in my industry this kind of thing comes up all the time and might be option. I am an engineer in charge of 3D printing production and see a lot of people asking for personalized custom parts including something to hold phones. It's an expensive option for most though.
I have a daystar ball mount and an iMagnet that I combined, look at it and you'll see how or I have photos in my build thread linked below. I love this set up.
Spent $15 and am super happy with it holding my iPhone 6 in the leather case (even on the highway with no doors). I do keep the drivers side sitting on the dash. Do properly clean the dash and wait 24 hours before using it so the adhesive can dry.
I have the same mount. Best mount ever!!! Can be put anywhere with the adhesive back and the super strong magnet holds my iPhone5s very well even during off road adventures.
Plus with the magnet you just slap the phone on and pull it off, no tightening and loosening of clamps to get your phone in and out. Just grab and go.
I bought this one and used the supplied phone holder. UNTIL the little clips shot out when I hit a pot hole. Almost put my eye out! Also scared the snot out of me. I replaced the phone holder with this one from rugged ridge. WORKS GREAT!!
I drank the koolaid and bought the Techmatte off amazon for $12. The CD holder mount is ingenious and the magnet weights virtually nothing. My phone sucks on to the mount and stays there - zero movement on road driving and it takes a fair amount off-road before a phone jars loose.
I couldn't be happier than I am with the Scosche MagicMount. It really is amazing how strongly the magnet holds your phone; it won't fall off regardless of how rough the road/trail is. But the best thing is how easy it is to take your phone on/off the mount. There's no messing with a bracket or spring loaded arms or anything, you simply place your phone on it (it's starts to pull it about an inch or so away) and then simply grab it off it. I vary the orientation of my phone on the mount (landscape for GPS, portrait otherwise) and it doesn't require anything other than how I choose to place the phone on it.
I wish there was a mount for closer to the e-brake handle or shifter area since I use CarPlay and the connecting Apple lightning cord comes from the console between the 2 front seats where the usb port is.
Not the cleanest look but a little bit of velcro and you can mount it anywhere. Ran the usb and aux from a hole drilled in the center cubby. I do have U-connect with BT but the audio quality is not even close to hardwired.
