This weekend while driving up some hills in southern Indiana I noticed while downshifting and being above 3000 RPMS it smelled like clutch burning. This was usually in 3rd or 4th gear. I thought it was just another vehicle, but I just noticed again today. What could it be? Clutch or transmission gearing. Clutch isn't slipping and nothing is falling out of gear.
If your clutch was going out you would notice hesitation.
For instance, try to pull out in 1st and you would have to rev the engine really high to get it going. Plus your cruise control would intermittently just quit when going up hills.
If your smelling the clutch, it could be from:
1: driving style. Riding the clutch too long, feathering too much, keeping your foot rested on the clutch pedal.
2: worn release bearing. The surface of the bearing can be sitting uneven in the bearing housing and it's not pushing the pressure plate springs in far enough to fully release the clutch plate.
3: hydraulic failure of the pedal. Either low on fluid, air in the system, master or slave cylinder failure. Something is preventing the fork from being able to fully be pressed into the pressure plate springs.
Those are usually the top 3 reasons.
More questions to ask about the problem here.
Is the only symprom as you describe?
Can you accurately predict when it will occur? Do you hear any strange noises?
Do you hear any chatter when the clutch pedal is pressed?
How many miles are on the vehicle?
How many miles are on the current clutch plate?
Is the smell severe or just a whiff?
I have about 69k on the clock. It's not a severe smell, just a whiff. I can predict it when I downshift and step on the gas and am at 3000 or more RPMS for a few seconds. No hesitation or other symptoms besides the smell
